BWW Review: Portland Stage's BABETTE'S FEAST Has Contemporary Resonance
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold
- Feb 5, 2018
Portland Stage has mounted an adaptation of Isak Dinesen's short story Babette's Feast, conceived by Abigail Killeen and written by Rose Courtney, that retains the message of grace and humanity at the core of the tale, while casting the narrative in an entirely different, highly contemporaneous light. Intriguing and sometimes perplexing in its Brechtian staging, this production adheres closely to the Dinesen text and bears little resemblance to the iconic movie of 1987.
BWW Review: New England Premiere of THE ROYALE: Boxing for Dignity
by Nancy Grossman
- Sep 20, 2017
Merrimack Repertory Theatre rings the bell for the start of its 39th season with the New England premiere of Marco Ramirez's award-winning play inspired by the life of Jack Johnson, the first black man to fight for the title of World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. THE ROYALE is a beautifully-written and acted story about a man's quest to get his due and make a difference, about the unforeseen consequences of his actions and the damage he leaves in his wake, and a stunning commentary on the rending of the American social fabric that continues to threaten our peace and tranquility.

DC: Take Me Out Flies Medium-High at Studio Theatre
by Maya Cantu
- May 25, 2005
Well, my old man might have been on to something. Take Me Out, Richard Greenberg's pointed fastball of a tragicomedy, sees baseball as not just symbolic of life, but of democracy itself--designed both for equal opportunity success and for the inherent failures of an imperfect system.
