Those Out There in The Dark: Audience Antics and Other Tall Tales From Off-Stage
by Jeffrey Ellis - May 9, 2012

Norma Desmond sings about them "out there in the dark" in Sunset Boulevard, Lauren Bacall dealt with a particularly sinister and deranged one in her 1981 film The Fan, and virtually everyone you know who had taken to the stage in a show anywhere around the world can regale you with stories about their wild and woolly antics. "They," of course, are the fans, the audiences, the people for whom theater is presented every night.

BWW Reviews: Plodding WRITER'S BLOCK Debuts At Chaffin's Barn
by Jeffrey Ellis - Sep 17, 2011

There's nobody who loves a tautly written thriller more than I - you know, the type of mystery where there's much conniving going on, one's baser desires are satiated, intelligence triumphs over the dull and commonplace. Unfortunately, despite having the requisite components, Writer's Block (the new play now onstage at Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre) just doesn't measure up; it is neither thrilling nor is it tautly written.

BWW Reviews: THE GREAT AMERICAN TRAILER PARK MUSICAL at Gaslight Theatre
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jul 8, 2011

Let's face it: We all know people in our own lives who mirror pretty closely the denizens of the Armadillo Acres trailer park - the setting for The Great American Trailer Park Musical. Sure, maybe it's just from standing behind them at the Wal-Mart or trying to avoid their gaze when they're ordering 'them there fajitas' at Chez Mexicano or, perhaps, you're only a generation or two away from the gap-toothed, slack-jawed yokels yourself. But we know 'em here in Tennessee. Hell, they're probably knocking at the door right now, wanting directions to the mall.

GREAT AMERICAN TRAILER PARK MUSICAL Plays Gaslight Dinner Theatre Thru 7/30
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jul 5, 2011

There's a new tenant at Armadillo Acres - and she's wreaking havoc all over Florida's most exclusive trailer park. When Pippi, the stripper on the run, comes between the Dr.Phil-loving agoraphobic Jeannie and her tollbooth collector husband, the storms begin to brew. Directed and choreographed by Bryan J. Wlas, with music direction by Nathan W. Brown, the musical stars Jama Bowen, Chris Egging, Emma Jordan, Alan Lee, Jenny Norris-Light, Paula Makar and Margie Mills.

BWW Interviews: Joshua Waldrep, A Life in the Theater
by Jeffrey Ellis - Apr 13, 2011

Pay no attention to what Joshua Waldrep tells you when you ask him what he thinks about his voice. The man is a master of understatement (no, really, he is...well, sometimes) and for some untold reason doesn't realize that he has an absolutely gorgeous voice. Seriously. At last fall's First Night, the Nashville Theatre Honors, he very nearly stole the stage out from under the estimable (read 'lovely and talented') Linda Sue Simmons Runyeon and Jenny Norris-Light when he joined them for Les Miserables medley that featured the very handsome and talented Mr. Waldrep (after he'd already stopped the show with Darin Richardson in their duet of 'The Proposal' from Titanic) doing a rather stunning version of 'Empty Chairs at Empty Tables.' Take it from me, the man has some very serious pipes on him.

BWW Reviews: THE FOREIGNER at Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre
by Jeffrey Ellis - Mar 25, 2011

Chaffin's Barn, the venerable Nashville theatrical venue where you get top-flight productions served up alongside some mighty tasty roast beef, is on a roll this year. Coming off the success of its excellent production of 'Til Beth Do Us Part, Chaffin's mines their estimable comedy vault to bring back Larry Shue's Southern-fried and Georgia-bred classic The Foreigner - and audiences will be flocking to the Barn for a thoroughly delightful experience.
