Leigh Silverman’s production of David Cale’s THE UNKNOWN, starring Tony, Emmy & SAG Award winner Sean Hayes, can now be streamed on demand through April 29.

BroadwayWorld has just learned that Leigh Silverman’s production of David Cale’s new play THE UNKNOWN, starring Tony, Emmy & SAG Award winner Sean Hayes, has recouped its $1.125  million capitalization during its 10-week record-breaking run at Studio Seaview.

Tony, Emmy & SAG Award winning actor Sean Hayes will return to the New York stage in THE UNKNOWN, a new one-man play by playwright David Cale, directed by Tony Award nominee Leigh Silverman. 

In the vernacular of the production, everything about it is quite satisfactory. Solid performances, handsome and functional staging, etc. It is all quite lovely. This production overall, however, fails to breakthrough. Christie’s script and characters are, as many of her works multifaceted and deliciously intertwined. As we get to know more about each of them over the course of the just short of two and a half hours (with one 15-minute intermission) information that makes all potential suspects much in the way the popular 1974 film Murder On The Orient Express did. This production is flat and rather two dimensional. Although the audience laughed in all the right places, we were never really drawn in. We watched the action play out before us, but the multitude of wait-what, and a-ha moments seemed to fall short not crossing the proscenium to connect with the audience members in the way they should. I will say that for me personally, , Matt Sullivan’s performance as Mr. Paravicini achieved the level of mysterious particularly well.

This summer, Chicago will be first to experience a reimagined production of The Who's Tommy when the original creators reunite at Goodman Theatre. Tony Award winners Pete Townshend and Des McAnuff, nearly 30 years after their epic pop-culture musical theater sensation first bowed on Broadway, have reconvened to tell the story of Tommy Walker for 2023 audiences.

As is often the case the BTG production is a high-quality production where seemingly everyone involved has played their role and done their work well. There is, however, one aspect I certainly did not expect. Laughter. At several points throughout the three acts in 2-hours, audience members responded with giggles, which I found rather confusing
