In the latest crazed mystery from Scot Augustson and directed by Jasmine Joshua, Becky-June is on hand to find the killer and tickle your funny bone. BWW Spotlight: Village Theatre's 19th Annual Festival of New Musicals
by Jay Irwin - Aug 14, 2019

It's that time of year again. One of my favorite times of year. That time when I get to spend the weekend at Village Theatre checking out the shows brought together by the folks at Village, spotlighting new works around the country. Some amazing, some needing work, but all showing promise. Now, of course, I can't review any of these. They're all still works in progress and not fully staged. But I can share what went on over the weekend as a potential coming attraction of musicals to come to a theater near you.

Seattle Musical Theatre has taken on Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" for the holidays, that bright and frothy, crowd-pleaser of a tuner. And while for this production they've managed to gather up some stellar talent, that talent sometimes has a hard time getting through the noise, or in most cases, the lack of noise.

BWW Review: Theater Schmeater's Inconsistent and Chaotic SHE KILLS MONSTERS
by Jay Irwin - Jul 29, 2018

Greetings adventurer, you and your party are approaching a multiheaded beast to which you must convey a story filled with drama, high stakes and dire consequences. You know in order to survive you need to present yourself in a certain way, so do you judiciously put forth just what you need in order to tell a focused and coherent tale thus placating/entertaining the beast or do you throw everything you've got at it and hope something appeases the monster? Well, if you're the folks at Theater Schmeater you do the latter as was evident with the forced, unfocused, and just plain loud production of "She Kills Monsters" currently playing.

A comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games, She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly's Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly's refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90s pop culture, acclaimed young playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

BWW Review: Theater Schmeater's Potent SWALLOW: A Visceral Examination of Loneliness
by Amelia Reynolds - Feb 6, 2018

Three isolated people deal with loneliness and its companion, despair, in the intensely felt and deeply moving 'Swallow', now performing at Theater Schmeater. This all takes place in an undefined city setting, preventing any familiarity from the start. Sam (played by Jasmine Joshua) is male-presenting, assigned female at birth, who not-so-gracefully hits on the ex-husband of their friend, Rebecca (played by Mahira Zook). Rebecca's husband cheated on her, and she self-soothes with alcohol. She's also recently had an accident, rendering her face conspicuously scarred, causing extra anguish to the already superficial Rebecca. Anna (played by Jasper Katie Driscol) lives in the apartment above Rebecca, and she's a bit unhinged. She spends all of her time on bizarre, unsanitary 'projects,' and she refuses to leave her apartment. After an evening where Rebecca finds herself intoxicated and hiding from her ex-husband, she scratches at Anna's door for help, and the two strike up an unlikely acquaintance speaking exclusively through Anna's mail slot.
