The Royal Court Theatre has announced its reopening programme, which will run from 16 June to 18 December 2021.

A filmed adaptation of The Winter’s Tale will be broadcast on BBC Four on Sunday 25 April 2021 at 7pm, celebrating Shakespeare’s birthday weekend and marking the first time in RSC history that a production will have a televised World Premiere.

With the one-year anniversary of theatres being forced to close in sight, the Royal Shakespeare Company has announced that audiences will now get the chance to see The Winter’s Tale and The Comedy of Errors, two of its postponed 2020 major Shakespeare productions.

Lorien Haynes’s Good Grief is hard to pin down. Half comedy, half drama, a bit of theatre with a dash of film. Short enough that it doesn’t become stale, but suitably long to paint an impeccable blueprint of loss. Natalie Abrahami directs the snappy 49-minute one-act play, while Sian Clifford (of Fleabag fame, playing Cat) and Nikesh Patel (Adam) navigate their way through the death of Adam’s partner and Cat’s friend Liv.

It was gutting to hear that the Young Vic had to cancel their plans for a gigantic street party to celebrate their 50th birthday in September. Like many of us who have celebrated birthdays during the pandemic, the theatre was forced to opt instead for a smaller, more socially distanced affair. Casting details have been announced for the Royal Shakespeare Company's (RSC) 2020 Summer production of The Winter's Tale, which plays in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre from 28 March 2020. Directed by RSC Deputy Artistic Director, Erica Whyman, the production will be cross-cast with The Comedy of Errors (from 25 April 2020) and Pericles (from 15 August 2020). All three plays are sponsored by Darwin Escapes.

Laura Wade isn't the first to tackle Jane Austen's unfinished novel, abandoned in 1805, but she is the only one so far to write herself, the struggling adaptor, into the text. This witty, ingenious and surprisingly philosophical play, which premiered at Chichester last year, merges Austen with Pirandello, and satire with big existential questions.

Tragedy was Lorca'sdomain, and fabric of his plays are about the darkest parts of collective human behaviour. Yaël Farber's production at the Young Vic is unrelentingly harrowing, and utterly captivating.
