There have been starrier casts heading up Donizetti's L'ELISIR D'AMORE at the Met--put the opera's name in the NY Times search engine and the first one that shows up is the debut of the famed tenor Tito Schipa in 1932, with bass Ezio Pinza as the quack snake-oil salesman Dulcamara. But this year's principals, soprano Pretty Yende and tenor Matthew Polenzani, gave more than enough pleasure (and then some) to send the audience out cheering.
The Warner Theatre's Met Opera Live in HD Season continues in the Nancy Marine Studio Theatre on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 12 pm with Donizetti's L'ELISIR D'AMORE. A complimentary 45 minute pre-opera lecture by Dr. Marguerite Mull e will be offered in the Studio Lobby two hours before the broadcast. Donizetti's comedic gem stars Pretty Yende as the spirited Adina in her debut of the role, opposite Matthew Polenzani as Nemorino, the simple peasant who falls in love with her. Polenzani enthralled Met audiences as Nemorino in 2013 with his ravishing Una furtive lagrima. Davide Luciano makes his Met debut as the role of Adina's arrogant fianc , Belcore, and Ildebrando D'Arcangelo sings the role of magic potion-peddling Doctor Dulcamara. Bartlett Sher's production is charming, with deft comedic timing but also emotionally revealing. Domingo Hindoyan conducts.
Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore returns to the Met on January 16 for ten performances through to February 17, starring South African sopranoPretty Yende as wealthy landowner Adina, and American tenor Matthew Polenzani as Nemorino, the poor villager hopelessly in love with her.
