Review: JOHN TOTHILL: THE LAST LIVING LIBERTINE, Soho Theatre

Ultimately, John Tothill: The Last Living Libertine is a fascinating, rambly take on not only Catholocism but a range of topics that will have you in stitches. Tothill somehow manages to prove his hypothesis that Catholicism is the same as Acid Techno with a brilliant ending that has the audience members on their feet.

Review: GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY at Kauffman Center

Connor McPherson’s “Girl from the North Country” enjoyed the Kansas City opening of its first national tour at the Kauffman Center on Tuesday night for a one week residency. McPherson has written and directed a “slice of life” show and filled in the blank spaces with songs from Bob Dylan’s career. “Girl” might be categorized as a “Juke Box” musical like “Jersey Boys” or “Mama Mia,” but this is certainly not that. This is not a musical play about Bob Dylan.

The anthemic stomper is an ode to unapologetically owning the choices we make in life and speaks to the singer-songwriter's journey of self-acceptance. In the accompanying music video, directed by Chris Boulton and Moss Davis, Freeman takes hit after hit, showcasing his resilience as he humbly holds his ground no matter what is thrown his way.

The video, directed by Niall Trask features the band in an AI homage to image creators Pierre & Gilles, Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard. “Bullet of Dignity” follows the recent release of the album track “Religion For One.”

Review: TRANSGRESSION, White Bear Theatre

Loretta Monaco's play introduces interesting ideas, but lacks the characterisation and dialogue required to build convincing and engaging characters

Review: MEASURE FOR MEASURE at Shoreside Theatre, Pumphouse Theatre

What did our critic think of MEASURE FOR MEASURE at Shoreside Theatre, Pumphouse Theatre? What makes any Shakespeare production superb is the director’s ability to recognise the themes within Shakespeare’s text - his extraordinary ability to bring his characters to life by a turn of phrase, a pun, the looks they share, by a breath they take, by the pause they make, the jokes they make.

Review: AMBERGRIS, Barbican

Ambergris pits the Jonah and Ahab stories together in what is another moodboard show, one that throws ideas together to see what sticks.
