Primary Stages announced today the selections for the 7th Annual ESPA Drills, a developmental play program that provides staged readings to four playwrights selected by blind submission, for scripts developed at Primary Stages ESPA.

Lead producer Charlotte Cohn will present a staged reading of  Jason Odell Williams' new play, Church & State, for one night only on Monday, April 4th at 7pm at The Cell Theatre (338 W 23rd Street). Proceeds from the reading will benefit Sandy Hook Promise. Ian Kahn ("George Washington" on AMC's Turn, Hard Love, Enron) will lead the cast, which also includes Beth Hylton, Judy Jerome, and Andy Talen.  Gregg Wiggans directs (TV's Smash). Director Cassey Kivnick has been chosen as the 2015-2016 Mike Ockrent Fellow on Jerry Mitchell's Gotta Dance. Ms. Kivnick's fellowship will last the entire length of the production process, with pre-production and rehearsals on Gotta Dance beginning in November 2015 and continuing on until the spring 2016 premiere on Broadway.  Ms. Kivnick will receive a $5000 award.

A signature feature of the National Theater Institute, weekly Theater Labs challenge students to put all the skills gained in classes into practice. When given just 15 hours to stage a scene, students learn to trust their creative instincts. Under the mentorship of a professional director, NTI students gain practical experience with a wealth of classical and contemporary texts as well as have the opportunity to work as actor, director, designer, and/or dramaturge each week.
