Performances Begin Saturday For AWAKE AND SING!

New Yiddish Rep will present Clifford Odets' 1935 masterpiece AWAKE AND SING! beginning this Saturday, November 25, with Opening Night set for December 6th at the Theater at the 14th Street Y, 344 East 14 Street (between First & Second Aves.) A Yiddish version of AWAKE AND SING! was produced on Broadway by WPA's Federal Theatre Project in 1938 and it is this translation that will be performed in the upcoming Off-Broadway revival with English supertitles.

Moshe Yassur's direction is bold and intelligent. Eli Rosen's translation is clear. Susannah Norris-Lindsay's costumes are simple and effective. Unfortunately most of the performances are delivered in one mode: whiny, angsty, and loud.

BWW REVIEW: Despite Talented Cast, Lost and Found's OLD NEW YEAR Fails To Find Its Way

OLD NEW YEAR, the latest production of the experimental theater collective Lost and Found (which operates under the National Yiddish Theater Folksbeine umbrella) has both lofty and worthwhile intentions. In fact, reading an interview with producer and curator Anya Zicer after seeing the play on its opening night at Art 345, I was impressed by the innovativeness of the company's 'verbatim' technique, as well as by the attempt to deploy that technique in this particular work.
