Thanks to the immense generosity of Tatiana and Gerret Copeland, The Playhouse on Rodney Square has undergone a complete renovation during its extended closure of indoor performances.

Made famous by the 1935 film featuring the legendary Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Top Hat is a nostalgic and light-hearted piece of escapism now playing at The Mill at Sonning. The story follows Jerry Travers, a Broadway star in his prime, who travels to England and falls for the society beauty Dale Tremont. Dale is not initially taken with him, but with a little charm, Jerry gets his girl. However, it is less than plain sailing after Dale mistakes him for Jerry's own manager Horace Hardwick, who is married to her friend, and subsequent mayhem ensues.

Jack Butterworth, who dazzled as Bobby van Husen in ‘The Boy Friend’ at The Menier Chocolate Factory will star as Jerry Travers in ‘Top Hat’, The Mill at Sonning’s now legendary annual Christmas musical.

I am very fortunate that my mother showed me movie musicals from a very young age. She didn't just show me the Disney musicals, like Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid. I was exposed to Julie Andrews's Maria and Brandy's Cinderella. I was mesmerized by all of these films. I loved the storytelling. I loved the music. I loved the romance. I wanted so badly to be just like the women I saw in those films, especially Julie Andrews It is what reminded me of what I loved about theatre. It reminded me of the joy you experience when the main couple meets. It reminded me how dance and song can tell a story like nothing else. It reminded me of how theatre allowed me to escape. It made me want to do theatre again forever.

HENNING RÜBSAM, choreographer and artistic director of SENSEDANCE, will teach a dance history/appreciation course for the general public on “ICONIC DANCE PARTNERSHIPS”.

Birdland has been Stritch's artistic home base for nearly two decades. He has played for some of the biggest names in show business and has been a staple of Monday nights at Jim Caruso's CAST PARTY.
