BWW Review: LA CAGE AUX FOLLES: The Best of Times at Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston
by Nancy Grossman
- Aug 12, 2019
In the summer of 1983, Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein put on a show that was light years ahead of the zeitgeist, vis-a-vis the awareness and acceptance of LGBTQ people in America, and about twenty years before the legalization of same-sex marriage. Yet, after a successful tryout at the Colonial Theatre in Boston, they boldly went where no Broadway musical had gone before when they opened LA CAGE AUX FOLLES at the Palace Theatre on August 21, 1983. Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston concludes its 51st Summer Season with LA CAGE, and I am pleased to report that the show continues to stand the test of time. The three most important components for a successful staging of this musical are the two actors who play the leading men, Georges (J.T. Turner) and Albin (James Darrah), and the dance troupe who comprise Les Cagelles, the drag performers at the Saint-Tropez title nightclub owned by the latter couple, and they collectively win the trifecta.
Tennessee Williams' THE TWO CHARACTER PLAY Comes to The 13th Street Rep Theatre
by Stephi Wild
- Aug 11, 2019
The ultimate brother-and-sister act, Clare and Felice, a pair of genetically matched hams who combine the narcissism, fearfulness, shabbiness and splendor of every actor who ever walked the boards. Tonight they must put on 'The Two Character Play' no less than brilliantly, for it might mean the end of their tour. They are competitive and codependent in a fierce, scary way that is particularly associated with show people and siblings. Just put them on a stage, then step back and watch them burn, possibly to a pile of ashes.
Taylor Hollingsworth Shares New Single TAP DANCIN DADDY
by Tori Hartshorn
- Jul 22, 2019
Following the Mystic Valley Band's recent reunion shows and a cover of his 2013 song “Dominos” on the critically acclaimed Better Oblivion Community Center album (which was the only one non-original Oberst/Bridgers composition), Taylor Hollingsworth's (Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band, Dead Fingers, The Dexateens) new LP Tap Dancin' Daddy is out August 2, 2019 on Flower Moon Records (the LA based label founded by Maria Taylor of Azure Ray).Today Taylor Hollingsworth shared the title track from the forthcoming release with PopMatters. About the song, PopMatters says, 'There's something beautifully fragile in Hollingsworth's performance on a song that calls to mind a '70s solo record from former Rolling Stone Bill Wyman or the country colors of Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance. And though it's a contemporary song, not a throwback, there is something about Hollingsworth's sincerity and the familiarity of the tale he tells that makes this a tune for any time.'

Taylor Hollingsworth Announces New Album 'Tap Dancin Daddy'
by Kaitlin Milligan
- Jun 26, 2019
Following the Mystic Valley Band's recent reunion shows and a cover of his 2013 song “Dominos” on the critically acclaimed Better Oblivion Community Center album (which was the only one non-original OberstBridgers composition), Taylor Hollingsworth's (Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band, Dead Fingers, The Dexateens) new LP Tap Dancin' Daddy is out August 2, 2019 on Flower Moon Records (the LA based label founded by Maria Taylor of Azure Ray). Today Paste premiered 'Devil N Me' the first single to be lifted from the forthcoming release. About the song Paste says, “'Devil N Me' is thematic kin to Florence + The Machine's 'Shake It Off' but shares sound qualities with the latest from Gary Clark Jr.—that's to say, it's pure, hot blues. There's that sludgy guitar, smug harmonica and even what sounds like a washboard breakdown, but there's also weird pedal effects and a synthetic organ. Hollingsworth sings the blues in his gritty, old-school alto, repeating 'I've got the devil in me' until it sounds like he's finally expunged the evil from his insides.'
Michaela Anne Announces New Album DESERT DOVE For 9/27 Release
by Tori Hartshorn
- Jun 12, 2019
Michaela Anne grew up bouncing around the States and abroad—from Washington to California to Italy, to name a few. A child of a military family, she learned to cope with her lack of roots and what she called “having more questions than answers” by learning to write songs. That skill set and those songs have carried Michaela Anne farther than ever imaginable, impressing the likes of NPR, who said she “works through weepers and hits the honky-tonks as every great country singer should,” and Noisey, who praised her most recent release as the antidote to commercial pop-country, calling her “our saving grace, our angel, the person who will help usher us into a new age.” And into the new age, she continues to push. On September 27th, Yep Roc Records will release Desert Dove, Michaela Anne's full-length follow up to her critically-acclaimed Bright Lights and the Fame. “By Our Design,” the album's first single and video, was premiered today at Rolling Stone. Celebrating the song as “a gorgeous meditation on picking the road not taken,” Marissa Moss, writing for Rolling Stone, notes that the track “highlights the songwriter's pristine voice.' The song, a mid-tempo burn framed with dense violins and tremolo guitar, is a sweet ode to a carved out life together; imperfect, but adaptive and free. Moss also points out Michaela Anne's intent for the song to sound like a “bit of Laurel Canyon dust into Tennessee soil.”Pre-order Desert Dove and/or stream “By Our Design” here.
BWW Review: MORNING'S AT SEVEN at Elmwood Playhouse
by Peter Danish
- May 21, 2019
Morning's at Seven is a distinctly old-fashioned play with a gently moral tone, full of larger than life characters, plenty of laughs and several touching moments. Its central theme is however indistinct, focusing primarily on the aging characters internal squabbles.
Frankie Lee's New Album STILLWATER Streaming Today
by Tori Hartshorn
- May 17, 2019
Frankie Lee is sharing his full record, Stillwater, today a week before the album comes out. Wide Open Country has the exclusive calling the new album an 'alluring collection of musings on hope lost and found.' The album stream follows the release of the beautifully dark rumination on aging and loss “In The Blue”, which sees Lee taking a subdued piano approach to the subject somehow softening the stark reality that time comes for us all. Lee notes that the song “dramatizes the confusion felt by the narrator as he watches the important things in life slip away. Realizing he cannot hold on to even one grain of sand, he is led to his final question whether all things are just a dream'. While American Songwriter said that '“In The Blue” finds the sweet spot between modern, soulful folk and old-school Western balladry, with Lee's gentle vocal lending an emotional heft to the track's understated, piano-forward arrangement'. Lee previously announced his hometown release show at Minneapolis' Cedar Cultural Center on June 28th after he returns from his European tour with Strand of Oaks, which starts this week.

Wyndham Reveals New Video For BOSSA BLUES, New Album Out This Friday
by Tori Hartshorn
- May 2, 2019
Los Angeles-based musican Wyndham will release his sophomore full-length solo album A Fistful Of Stars this Friday (pre-order). In anticipation of the upcoming release the album is streaming in full at Buzzbands LA. About the album Buzzbands LA says, 'The album recalls a time when '70s AM radio often served as an emotional counterpoint to the tumult of the times. Wyndham's folk-pop finery and balmy vocals (think: Gerry Rafferty) paint a picture of an artist determined to center himself emotionally, lest the baggage of the outside world become an unbearable weight.'
