In a time of uncertainty in United States and China relations, The Philadelphia Orchestra will serve as a cultural bridge, fostering meaningful people-to-people exchange through music during its 2019 Tour of China, May 16-28, 2019. Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin will lead the tour, bringing the "Philadelphia Sound" to Beijing, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Shanghai, with Shanghai-born pianist Haochen Zhang as soloist. The 2019 visit will mark the Orchestra's 12th tour of China-the most of any American orchestra-and will coincide with 40 years of official U.S.-China diplomatic relations.

The Swedish label BIS Records is releasing its third album of the ongoing Mahler recording series in collaboration with Music Director Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra—a recording of Mahler's Second Symphony, Resurrection, also featuring soprano Ruby Hughes, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke and the Minnesota Chorale. The album will be released on disc in the U.S. and Canada, and digitally worldwide, on February 1, 2019, but will be available in advance at Orchestra Hall and through the Minnesota Orchestra's website, minnesotaorchestra.org, beginning December 14, 2018.
Osmo Vanska announced plans today at the Minnesota Orchestra's annual meeting to conclude his tenure as Music Director of the Minnesota Orchestra in August 2022. The 2021-22 season, his final as music director, will mark his 19th year at the helm of the Minnesota Orchestra, capping what is widely considered one of the great musical partnerships in Minnesota Orchestra history. Beyond 2022, Mr. Vanska and the Minnesota Orchestra will maintain their musical relationship, with Mr. Vanska returning for ongoing concert engagements.

This evening's program, "Bernstein Birthday Bash," celebrates the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein. Featured will be excerpts from West Side Story and Candide, Bernstein's arrangements for piano of Aaron Copland's El Salon Mexico, and the solo piano version of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
The Philadelphia Orchestra returns to Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage for three concerts this season under the leadership of Music Director and Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who is currently celebrating the 10th anniversary of his debut with the Orchestra. The first program, on Tuesday, November 13 at 8:00 p.m., also highlights Mr. Nézet-Séguin's role as music director of The Metropolitan Opera with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato joining the musicians for a performance of Chausson's Poème de l'amour et de la mer. The program also features the New York premiere of Anthology of Fantastic Zoology by Mason Bates, as well as works by Wagner and Respighi.

During the program entitled CHOPIN IN PARIS, Mr. Siegel asks the question "what music did this patriotic Polish composer write once he settled in Paris?" The answer is an evening of stirring Polonaises, dreamy Nocturnes, the enchanting Mazurkas, the vivacious Tarantelle, and the glorious Barcarolle.
With an enthusiasm that is contagious, world-class credentials and an astounding virtuosity, Jeffrey Siegel returns to Stage One with Keyboard Conversations. Launching his 2018-19 series of engagements (his eighth at the Harris Center) with a commemoration of Rachmaninoff and Debussy, Mr. Siegel will offer comments on these two beloved composers, and then give a virtuosic performance of several piano masterpieces. His August program will include the famous C Sharp Minor Prelude, Clair de lune, and stirring Etudes of both composers; a lively Q&A will follow.
