Friday, July 26 at 6pm Part of Carnegie Hall Citywide Series FREE at Bryant Park Cha Wa's high voltage music fuses fat funky beats with New Orleans-style brass and Mardi Gras Indian spectacle. Lead singer J'Wan Boudreaux's gritty vocals are steeped in the Crescent City's legendary Mardi Gras tradition where African-American men march in Native American dress inspiring a vibrant street music. While Cha Wa honors the tradition with pulse-quickening and foot stomping rhythms, they also add a socially conscious element with songs addressing injustice. You'll move to their intoxicating groove and imagine yourself part of a jubilant New Orleans second line parade.

On Tuesday, February 12 at The Sheen Center for Thought & Culture (18 Bleecker Street at the corner of Elizabeth Street in NYC) gets a behind-the-scenes look at 'Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth,' the most extensive public display of original Tolkien material for several generations. For one night only at The Sheen Center's Loreto Theater, hear about the Tolkien and the landmark exhibition (currently running through May 12 at The Morgan Library & Museum) from John T. McQuillen, Ph.D., Associate Curator of Printed Books & Bindings and organizing curator of the exhibit for the Morgan Library, and Holly Ordway, Ph.D., Professor of English at Houston Baptist University and author of the forthcoming book Tolkien's Modern Sources: Middle-earth Beyond the Middle Ages. Moderated by Corey Olsen, Ph.D., the 'Tolkien Professor' and President of Signum University.

Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo Celebrate Music From the Americas June 27

The celebrated Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo will perform at the 18th New York Guitar Seminar at Mannes on Wednesday, June 27 at 7pm at the Americas Society, 680 Park Avenue, New York. The Duo will be joined by Brazilian guitarist João Luiz in a concert celebrating Music from the Americas. In addition to works by Brazilian composers Piazzolla, Machado, Jobim, Simas, Clarice Assad, Villa-Lobos and Bellinati, the program will also feature works by US native Paul Moravec and Argentinean Astor Piazzolla. The concert is produced in partnership with the Americas Society, and part of the New York Guitar Seminar at Mannes that takes place from June 26 to July 1. The acclaimed Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo will appear at the 26th annual Long Island Guitar Festival on April 14 at 8:00PM.   The program, 40th Anniversary Retrospective includes works by Manuel de Falla, Francesco Canova da Milano, Joaquin Rodrigo, Gioacchino Rossini, Paul Moravec, Isaac Albeniz, J. S. Bach and Philipp Nicolai. The concert will take place at Hillwood Cinema at Hillwood Commons, Long Island University Post, Brookville, NY. The duo will present a Master Class on Sunday, April 15 at the Fine Arts Center, LIU Post.  Concert tickets are $25.00 General; Seniors/students/members of guitar societies (with ID) $20.00 & $10.00.
