The Met Celebrates The Holiday Season With Performances, Events, And Special Displays

The Met continues a beloved holiday tradition with the presentation of its Christmas Tree and 18th-Century Neapolitan Cr che, which will be on view from November 21, 2017 January 7, 2018. Magnificently set in front of the 18th-century Spanish choir screen from the Cathedral of Valladolid in the Museum's Medieval Sculpture Hall (gallery 305), the tree has become a must-see holiday favorite of both New Yorkers and visitors from around the world. Recorded Christmas music and daily lighting events add to the enjoyment of the holiday display.

Eighth Blackbird Unveils OLAGON On Cedille Records

Multiple Grammy-winning sextet Eighth Blackbird, Musical America's 2017 ensemble of the year, joins forces with Iarla Lion ird, vocalist with the Irish music supergroup The Gloaming, for the world premiere recording of Olag n: A Cantata in Doublespeak, a contemporary updating of an ancient Irish legend, with music by Princeton University's Dan Trueman, who also plays fiddle on the album, and text by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon.

Armitage Gone! Dance to Present HALLOWEEN UNLEASHED at La MaMa

The core of Armitage's work centers on a series of dance 'dreamscapes' that take the viewer on a poetic journey to evoke mysterious landscapes of reverie, dream and altered consciousness. Her latest work, Halloween Unleashed: Dancing Bones, Tasting Darkness and the Skeleton Within, is a subversive comedy designed to spook adults and families in a live action rendition of Disney's 1929 animated masterpiece, The Skeleton Dance. Combined with images from the wild, capricious street theater of Haitian carnival, Halloween Unleashed offers punk attitude and visual high-jinx, in a dance where bones dance alone, shoes fly off feet, and skeletons turn into musical instruments.

Announcing Lincoln Center's White Light Festival 2017

Ehrenkranz Artistic Director Jane Moss today announced Lincoln Center's 2017 White Light Festival, which runs from October 18 through November 15. With more than 35 events presented in 13 venues throughout the city, including U.S. and New York premieres and nine commissions, the eighth annual international festival will explore transcendence, interior illumination, and faith in the human spirit, as exhibited through artistic expression across continents and centuries. The multidisciplinary festival takes its name from a quotation by Estonian composer Arvo Part: "Icouldcomparemymusic to white light, which contains all colors. Only a prism can divide the colors and make them appear; this prism could be the spirit of the listener."

Scott Wollschleger's Complete Piano Works to be Performed by Karl Larson at Spectrum, 11/20

On Monday, November 20, 2017 at 8:30pm at Spectrum in Brooklyn (70 Flushing Ave, Garage A), pianist Karl Larson performs Part I of the complete piano works of Scott Wollschleger, a composer whose distinct musical language has been described as evocative and kaleidoscopic by The New York Times. Part II takes place on Friday, February 2, 2018 at 8:30pm at Spectrum.

U.S. Premiere of THE PSLAMS EXPERIENCE Comes to Lincoln Center's White Light Festival

This fall, Lincoln Center's White Light Festival will present the U.S. premiere of The Psalms Experience, an unprecedented choral project featuring four world-renowned choirs traversing 1,000 years of music over the course of 12 thematic concerts. Staged in four illuminated spaces across New York City November 1 11, the project will present all 150 psalms set to music by 150 composers, from Bach and Handel to living composers from around the globe, including new commissions by Caroline Shaw, Nico Muhly, and David Lang, among others.

American Lyric Theater to Introduce THE NEW CREW with Special Salon

American Lyric Theater presents The New Crew, a salon including performances by and discussions with American Lyric Theater's newest Resident Artists in the Composer Librettist Development Program: composers Shuying Li, Andy Teirstein, and Liliya Ugay; librettists Lorene Cary, Julian Crouch, and Lila Palmer; and dramaturg Antigoni Gaitana.

HUMAN NOISE Opens Thursday at Imago Theatre

New additions to the line-up including Tony-award winning playwright Tony Kushner, Rolling Stone writer Matt Taibbi, Aspen Institute President and CEO Walter Isaacson, French philosopher and social critic Bernard-Henri Levy, filmmaker Joe Swanberg, Obama Presidential Center architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, and Publican chef Paul Kahan.
