Olney Theatre Center has received a $1 million endowment gift from the Eugene B. Casey Foundation, to support the work of the Vanguard Arts Fund which provides intensive workshop time for collaboratively-developed new works.

Theater J has announced the winner of the 2022 Patty Abramson Jewish Play Prize: Alicia Louzoun-Heisler with her play Bashert. The Theater J Patty Abramson Jewish Play Prize awards $3,000 and a stage reading to a promising emerging woman playwright.

Spooky Action Theater kicks off its 2022/2023 season with Jordan Harrison's clever examination of a radical alternate lifestyle in Maple and Vine, directed by Stevie Zimmerman. Performances begin September 29 & 30 with Pay-What-You-Can previews and run until October 23, 2022 at Spooky Action's home at The Universalist National Memorial Church, 1810 16th Street, NW. Press performance is Saturday, October 1 at 8pm.

Signature Theatre is accepting submissions for original and unpublished full-length plays (no musicals) from now through August 15, 2022. Playwrights must currently reside in Virginia, Maryland or DC. Only one submission per playwright.

'The Joy that Carries You' is a touching and touchingly thoughtful journey, one which many might recognize in their own. But Secka and Stoller also make this a celebration of the relationships which until (only) very recently were taboo. Thank goodness we're no longer at the stage where seeing two women choosing each other as life-partners is a shock; we can now see them as human beings. But we also know that relationships like this are still fraught with a unique form of anxiety, between the women themselves but especially with their families.

Awa Sal Secka and Dani Stoller's new play The Joy That Carries You begins rehearsals today for its World Premiere at Olney Theatre Center. Directed by Jason Loewith and Kevin McAllister, performances begin May 11, 2022, and run through June 12, 2022. The Invited Press performance will be held Sunday, May 15 at 1:45 pm.

Signature Theatre has announced that works by local playwrights Aeneas Sagar Hemphill, Tuyet Thi Pham and Olivia Luzquinos have been selected for the 2022 season of SigWorks: Monday Night New Play Readings. Their plays, Ada (Aeneas Sagar Hemphill), Dinner and Cake (Tuyet Thi Pham) and Damn Things Will Kill Ya (Olivia Luzquinos) will be read on February 7, March 7 and May 9, respectively.

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater’s latest world premiere film, “The 51st State', is now available to stream. You can watch the film by clicking here.  The hyper-local 60-minute docudrama created by Washington, D.C. artists through the voices of 11 residents was inspired by protests and the reignition of a movement after the murder of George Floyd and the quest for creating the 51st state and sovereignty in Washington, D.C. From a first-time protestor to a fourth-generation Washingtonian political scientist, to artists, an attorney, people of faith, and a retired couple moved to take part in the movement despite the COVID-19 risks, these diverse perspectives and real-life stories are vividly told and transformed into affecting narratives by 10 local playwrights. 

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater's latest world premiere docudrama, The 51st State, will receive its world premiere through Arena Stage's Supper Club on September 16 at 7 p.m. Following the premiere, viewers can join artists and creatives for a post-film discussion and after-party on Zoom.

Olney Theatre Center, recipient of 27 nominations for the 2020 Helen Hayes Awards, tonight releases a specially filmed version of The Humans by Stephen Karam and directed by Aaron Posner.
