'Songs for a New World' was Brown's first produced show and features 16 songs connected by the common theme 'the moment of transition'. 2014 Rising Star Finalists Will Compete for $5,000 at Celebration of the Arts Gala, 3/29

The Howard County Arts Council, in its 33rd year of service to the public of Howard County, presents the 17th Annual Celebration of the Arts in Howard County on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Peter and Elizabeth Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center, Howard Community College (HCC), Columbia, MD. Dr. Kathleen Hetherington, President of HCC, will serve as Honorary Chair. Richard W. Story, Senior Vice President for Marketing, JPB Enterprises, Inc. will emcee the event. The Celebration is a multi-faceted signature event, showcasing and promoting the arts and raising funds in support of the arts, artists, and arts organizations in Howard County. One of the highlights of the 2014 Celebration is the Rising Star Emerging Performing Artist Award Competition, in which ten finalists will compete for a cash prize of $5,000. In December, individual performing artists - aged 18 to 35 years and currently or recently living, working, performing regularly, or receiving training in Howard County - auditioned before a panel of professionals in their discipline. Review criteria included artistic merit, demonstrated experience in the arts, and commitment to a career in the arts.

The 17th Annual Celebration of the Arts in Howard County will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center at Howard Community College (HCC) in Columbia. Kevin Kelehan, Partner with Carney, Kelehan, Bresler, Bennett & Scherr, LLP and recipient of the 2012 Howie Award for Outstanding Community Supporter of the Arts, will serve as Honorary Chair for the event. Richard W. Story, Senior Vice President, Community Relations and Government Affairs, and Business Development Liaison for Howard Bank, will serve as Event Emcee.

13th Annual Mario Lanza and Elaine Malbin Vocal Competitions Set for Today

Legendary opera star, Elaine Malbin, will be among a panel of experts judging the 13th Annual Mario Lanza and Elaine Malbin Vocal Competitions which will be held on the main stage at Broadway and 86th Street from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Other judges will include Bill Ronayne, President of the Mario Lanza Society; Lewis Ehlers, noted opera agent and an associate with Robert Lombardo and Associates; and Cristina Necula, an opera singer and author of My Life in Opera. A total of 29 singers -- nine tenors and 20 sopranos - have registered as of this date and will compete for prizes. The competitions are the largest outdoor competitions in the country.

Nine finalists will compete for a cash prize totaling $5,000 in the Howard County Arts Council?s 2009 Rising Star Emerging Performing Artist Awards on Saturday, April 25, 2009, at the 12th annual Celebration of the Arts in Howard County, to be held at the Jim Rouse Theatre, Wilde Lake High School, Columbia. Performing artists between the ages of 18-35, currently or recently living, working, performing regularly, or receiving training in Howard County, auditioned in January before a panel of professionals working in their field of discipline.
