BWW Review: BELLA: AN AMERICAN TALL TALE at Dallas Theater Center

There are few things in the world as thrilling as seeing a new work come to life on stage, especially when that stage is the Dallas Theater Center's Wyly Theatre, our local answer to Broadway-caliber theatre. The anticipation and possibility of being the first one to discover a new hit is so exciting - but it is balanced by the opportunity for a show to be unexceptional or 'not ready for primetime.' BELLA: AN AMERICAN TALL TALE, in this writer's opinion, falls into the latter category.

Rhonda LaChanze Sapp, better known by her stage name LaChanze (Creole: the charmed one), taken from her grandmother, was born in St Augustine, Florida.
Grew up in Connecticut, her parents nurtured her love for performing by enrolling her in high schools for the performing arts.
After high school, LaChanze studied Drama at Morgan State University, before transferring to the University of the Arts, she studied Theatre and Dance. Her first Summer job was as a tap dancer in the ensemble of out of town tryout of 'Uptown...It's Hot!.' She made her Broadway debut in the same show in 1986.

Dallas Theater Center announced today complete details for the world premiere musical, Bella: An American Tall Tale with book, lyrics and music by Kirsten Childs (FLY). Directed by Robert O'Hara, Bella: An American Tall Tale will begin with a Pay-What-You-Can performance on Thursday, Sept. 22 and will run through Saturday, Oct. 22 in the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre.

The New Group has announced additional casting for Sweet Charity, the production launching the company's 2016-2017 Season. Choreographed by Joshua Bergasse and directed by Leigh Silverman, this production features Yesenia Ayala, Darius Barnes, James Brown III, Asmeret Ghebremichael, Shuler Hensley, Sasha Hutchings, Donald Jones, Jr., Nikka Graff Lanzarone, Emily Padgett and Joel Perez, and as previously announced, two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster as Charity Hope Valentine. A limited Off-Broadway engagement plays November 2 - December 11 at The Pershing Square Signature Center (The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre, 480 West 42nd Street), with Official Opening Night set for Sunday, November 20.

Capathia Jenkins is a Brooklyn-born actress who most recently starred as 'Medda' in the hit Disney production of Newsies' on Broadway. She made her debut in The Civil War, where she created the role of Harriet Jackson. She starred in the Off-Broadway 2000 revival of Godspell, where she wowed audiences with her stirring rendition of 'Turn Back, O Man'. She returned to Broadway in The Look of Love and was critically acclaimed for her performances of the Bacharach/David hits. Ms. Jenkins then created the roles of 'The Washing Machine' in Caroline, Or Change and 'Frieda May' in Martin Short-Fame becomes me where she sang 'Stop the Show' and brought the house down every night.
