Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC), the theatrical Union that represents over 4,000 professional stage directors and choreographers will host an all-day summit for its Members and their guests, on Monday, May 6. The day, which begins at 1:00 PM, is designed to facilitate a space for directors and choreographers to engage in conversation with their colleagues around their craft, to raise the profile of Northwest directors and choreographers, and to encourage increased community through SDC.
Artistic Director Braden Abraham today announced Seattle Rep's new nine-play 2019/2020 season, which features the second Public Works Seattle production, two musical works, a world premiere, a Pulitzer-Prize nominated play, and more. To align with their vision of 'theater at the heart of public life,' Seattle Rep is also rolling out their new visual identity over the next few months, with a full campaign to be launched in August. A few years back I was fortunate enough to see Lucas Hnath's wonderful play, "A Doll's House, Part 2" on Broadway and was blown away. So, when the Seattle Rep announced it as part of their season I was absolutely thrilled. Then when they announced the powerhouse cast of some of Seattle's finest actors, Pamela Reed, Michael Winters, Khanh Doan, and Laura Kenny in the play, I was over the moon. This should be a slam dunk! Which then begs the question from me, "What happened?" as the performance I saw last night felt stiff and disjointed at times as if the actors were simply reading from the script. It picked up a bit by the end, but this is certainly not what I've come to expect from the Rep.

Steven Dietz is touted as being 'one of America's most successful, prolific living dramatists' (The Seattle Times, 2018) and it's no surprise given his rich, engaging characters, raw, honest dialog, and stories that feel effortless as they slip in the emotional knife before you know it. His self-imposed exile is disrupted by the arrival of Ben's old war buddy, Jeeter, with his new girlfriend and her volatile mother in tow. Seattle Repertory Theatre is excited to present famed monologist Mike Daisey's newest work, A People's History. In this series of 18 stand-alone monologues, Daisey uses his razor-sharp wit to explore a history of the U.S. he was not taught in high school. From the first landing of Columbus to the election of Donald Trump, Daisey will contrast his high school history book with Howard Zinn's electrifying A People's History Of The United States. Each night of the production will feature a fresh chapter from the history book - chapter content to be performed night to night will not be disclosed in advance of the performance as part of the experience. The story from playwright David Grimm (Measure for Pleasure; The Miracle at Naples) follows a group of Scandinavian immigrants working to put on the world premiere of Ghosts, a new play by the revered and controversial Norwegian dramatist of the time, Henrik Ibsen.
