Theater For The New City's Dream Up Festival Will Present OCCASIONALLY NOTHING

It was inevitable, perhaps, that our post-truth politics would seep into 21st century absurdist theater. One sunny example is 'Occasionally Nothing' by Natalie Menna, which takes us to a dismal time-to-come when something can become a profound, obvious nothing. Life becomes the time in between the sometimes which sometimes happen. The piece won awards in Planet Connections Festivity for developmental staging's, with critics cheering the playwright for her mastery of Theater of the Absurd. Theater for the New City's Dream Up festival will present the work September 8 to 16. Ivette Dumeng directs.

From August 27 to September 4, August Strindberg Rep will perform Strindberg's 'Creditors' in a new translation by Robert Greer as part of the Dream Up Festival at Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave.  This masterpiece from Strindberg's naturalist period is rarely excelled in its unity of construction, dramatic tension and acute psychological analysis, but it is far less performed and anthologized than 'The Father' or 'Miss Julie.' During an afternoon in a lounge at a seaside resort, a revenge is played out as a credulous artist has his mind poisoned against his wife by her former husband. Translator Robert Greer directs.

BWW Interview: Ilia Volok Brings DIARY OF A MADMAN Back from Dubai

Ilia Volok's critically acclaimed one-man show, DIARY OF A MADMAN, was just nominated for a New York Innovative Theater Award in the best solo performance category. When I saw the show last fall, I noticed it drew a particularly eclectic audience--people of all ages, from all walks of life. That popular demand that led to an extended run came as no surprise to me because Gogol's classic, poignantly brought to life, deals with loneliness and the human propensity for dreams and delusions. Volok's bittersweet portrayal of Poprishchin made the character an Everyman instead of a farce. I knew show had universal appeal, but I wouldn't have guessed its next stop would be Dubai.

Claremont Dramatic Society Presents PLAYING WITH FIRE By August Strindberg at Masque Theatre

August Strindberg, one of Europe's most respected literary figures, wrote only three comedies, one of which is this one-act play about having nothing to do. Set at the beach house where Knut and his wife Kerstin live with his parents, Playing With Fire deals with the ever-present web of relationships, and how to untangle them - if it's at all possible. Can there be love without jealousy? Strindberg's hypothesis is that love both generates and feeds off jealousy. Will Knut and Kerstin's marriage survive the arrival of their close friend, Axel, as all three "play with fire"?
