Ahoy! For someone who considers herself a theater buff, I am embarrassed to admit that before seeing this production, I knew very little about The Pirates of Penzance, other than the oft-parodied "Modern-Major General" song.
Gilbert & Sullivan Austin has a long, glorious past of traditionally amazing shows. Unfortunately their current production of RUDDIGORE is a mixed bag and doesn't come off as well as it likely could.

With book and lyrics by Michael Harms and Barb Scheffler, and musical direction by John Ricciardelli, the show incorporates the music of Arthur Sullivan as well as some of the most recognizable songs from operas by Bizet, Delibes, Mozart, Romberg, Rossini, Strauss, and Verdi.

As previously reported, Lauren Ambrose will be playing as Eliza Doolittle and Harry Hadden-Paton will play Henry Higgins, alongside Norbert Leo Butz as Alfred P. Doolittle and Diana Rigg as Mrs. Higgins. Say what you will, The Hypocrites have found a way to transform traditional theatre into a form of entertainment that appeals to folks who'd rather go to a party than sit in a theater. And they've done it using Gilbert & Sullivan's operetta THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE. No joke.
