Wilbury Group Closes 2017/18 Season With THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE Image

The Wilbury Theatre Group closes it's 2017/18 season with a wicked and rambunctious new adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan's classic masterpiece, The Pirates of Penzance (Or, The Slave of Duty) May 17-June 3, 2018.

Adapted by Sean Graney and Kevin O'Donnell with the world-renown Hypocrites theatre company out of Chicago, this updated version of The Pirates of Penzance is presented promenade-style, making it a unique production that allows the audience to move around the space with the actors for a more engaging experience. Directed by Wilbury Group Artistic Director Josh Short with music direction by Matt Requintina and choreography by Ali Kenner Brodsky, this unique production of Pirates is a delightfully and fantastically eccentric take on Gilbert and Sullivan's preposterous topsy-turvy world.

"This hilarious new adaptation of Pirates of Penzance beautifully captures the revolutionary spirit of the original, beloved comic opera by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan," says Wilbury Artistic Director Josh Short. "Everything that the most traditional Gilbert and Sullivan fans expect will be here-and a lot more. Staged promenade-style, there's an incredibly exciting relationship between the actor and spectator unlike any production we've ever done, and we can't think of a better way to end our first season here in our new home than with this incredibly joyful play for our audiences."
THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE... is presented May 17-June 3, 2018 at The Wilbury Theatre Group, 40 Sonoma Court, Providence RI. Tickets are $15-$35. Call 401.400.7100 or www.thewilburygroup.org/the-pirates-of-penzance.

Pirates of Penzance follows the adventures of Frederick, who was mistakenly apprenticed as a young boy to a band of sentimental pirates. Now 21, he falls head-over-heels for the Major-General's daughter and forswears the buccaneer's life forever, or so he thinks...

Critics and audiences alike have fallen in love with this new uniquely stylized, fast-paced rendition of Pirates of Penzance, toured across the country by The Hypocrites under the direction of Sean Graney. The Chicago Times calls the show, "a zany delight from start to finish." The Chicago Tribune writes, "a delicious little off-Loop version of The Pirates of Penzance. This is not your father's Gilbert and Sullivan...." and the Boston Globe calls it "spirited, affectionate, and nearly irresistible....Apart from some amusing interpolations of brief snatches of contemporary songs, Pirates of Penzance displays a surprising fidelity to the original 19th-century score and storyline."
