Museum Of Arts And Design Exhibition Examines The Work Of Roger Brown

The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) presents an exhibition dedicated to the work of American artist Roger Brown (1941-1997), examining the ways in which collecting, arrangement, and the theatrical informed and enriched his artistic practice. Roger Brown: Virtual Still Lifes, on view through September 15, 2019, features works made in the final years of the artist's life that combined his passion for collecting with his groundbreaking approach to painting. Marking the first solo museum show in New York devoted to Brown, the exhibition at MAD offers a rare opportunity to view over forty works that trace the artist's evolution through the lens of collection and display.

National Portrait Gallery Announces 2019 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition Finalists

The Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery has announced the finalists for its fifth triennial Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. Their work will be presented in "The Outwin 2019: American Portraiture Today," a major exhibition premiering at the National Portrait Gallery Oct. 26 through Aug. 30, 2020. Every three years, artists living and working in the United States are invited to submit one of their recent portraits to a panel of experts chosen by the museum. The works of this year's 46 finalists were selected from over 2,600 entries. The first-prize winner, to be announced this fall, will receive a cash award of $25,000 and a commission to create a portrait of a living person for the museum's permanent collection.

NADA Announces First Edition Of The Chicago Invitational

The New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA), the definitive non-profit arts organization dedicated to the cultivation, support, and advancement of new voices in contemporary art, is pleased to announce the first edition of the Chicago Invitational. The new contemporary art fair will take place at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel from Wednesday, September 18 through Saturday, September 21, 2019, coinciding with EXPO Chicago.

Bayrakdarian, Messerlian, and Babson Elected to CAMA Board of Directors

Renowned soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian, retired internist George Messerlian, and local arts benefactor Marta Babson have been elected to the Board of Directors for Community Arts Music Association (CAMA) of Santa Barbara. The elections took place December 12, 2018 (for Ms. Bayrakdarian and Dr. Messerlian), and January 24 (for Ms. Babson).

The Art Institute Of Chicago Presents ANNE IMHOF: SEX

The Art Institute of Chicago presents Sex, an exhibition with new works by Anne Imhof (b. 1978, Giessen) that opens to the public on May 30, and will include three days of live performances through June 1. Imhof has emerged as one of the most provocative and pioneering voices of her generation. Her work establishes a new paradigm for exhibitions and gives form to a sense of alienation and detachment that increasingly shapes our society. Sex shows the wide range of attitudes present in Imhof's practice, as the exhibition moves from a choreographed performance during its first days, to an installation including sculpture, painting and sound in the weeks that follow.

The Art Institute of Chicago and the J. Paul Getty Museum Announce Manet and Modern Beauty Exhibition

The Art Institute of Chicago and the J. Paul Getty Museum are pleased to present the upcoming Manet and Modern Beauty exhibition set to be on view May 26-September 8, 2019 at the Art Institute of Chicago and October 8, 2019-January 12, 2020 at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.  This exhibition focuses exclusively on Edouard Manet and will be the first to center on his last years, bringing together an impressive array of genre scenes, still lifes, pastels, and portraits of fashionable women-favorite actresses and models, bourgeois women of his acquaintance, and his wife-as well as intimate male friends.

Art Institute of Chicago Presents New Exhibition 'The People Shall Govern!'

Formed in 1979, Medu Art Ensemble organized a front of cultural and artistic resistance to South Africa's apartheid policy of racial discrimination. Medu means 'roots' in the Sepedi language. As their name suggests, the collective operated underground, drawing exiled South African and international visual, music, and literary artists to work across the South African border in Gaborone, Botswana. At its height, the Medu collective numbered more than 50 members.

Seven Participants Announced For LA Phil's National Composers Intensive 2019

In its Centennial year, the Los Angeles Philharmonic continues to grow in its commitment to supporting the creation of new music and nurturing young composers through two programs: National Composers Intensive (NCI), for composers ages 18 to 30, and the Nancy and Barry Sanders Composer Fellowship Program (CFP) for high school-aged composers. For the first time, the NCI program collaborates with New York City-based International Contemporary Ensemble (the Ensemble) to work with seven composers who will have the opportunity to workshop their pieces, both in New York and in Los Angeles, culminating in a performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Irish Arts Center Presents Dannielle Tegeder: Drawing Room, The Field Guide To Experimental Irish Literature

Irish Arts Center (IAC), a multidisciplinary center dedicated to bringing people of all backgrounds together through the excellence and dynamism of Irish arts and culture, presents Dannielle Tegeder: Drawing Room, the Field Guide to Experimental Irish Literature, January 11-April 7. For this active exhibition, New York artist Dannielle Tegeder reached out to select contemporary Irish poets, asking them to contribute a work of theirs, in some way evoking or thematically related to Ireland. Using sheets of archival paper printed with these pieces, Tegeder has begun-and will continue-responding to their words through abstract drawing and collage. The exhibition will have several different iterations, changing and evolving as new collaborations between artist and poet emerge.
