The first rehearsal images were released today for a new version of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya by multiple award-winning playwright Anya Reiss, premiering on Wednesday 8 October at St. James Theatre. Directed by Russell Bolam, Reiss's adaptation of Chekhov's masterpiece of modern theatre reignites the piece for a 21st century audience, revealing the universal difficulties of impossible love, longing and regret. Acclaimed American playwright Christopher Durang is well known for his absurd and often outrageous humor, and his VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE, winner of a Tony Award in 2013 for Best Play, is no exception. An engaging farce with a somewhat surprising degree of sentiment at its core, this darkish comedy sends up the classic work of Anton Chekhov while also countering it with a kind of cock-eyed optimism. This Trustus Theatre's production, in the capable hands of director Jim O'Connor and well-modulated cast, just completed its first week's run and happily will be playing for another two weeks. There are plenty of in-jokes for theatre majors and the cognoscenti, but the uninitiated can also enjoy the modern comedy and unexpected charm that infuses Durang's take on a very idiosyncratic family whose caricatured members are yet familiar to us.

Bette Davis On the Edge, a new one-woman show about the screen legend, written and performed by Christine St. John, an American actress, who has spent the last two decades working in London, and directed by renowned Chicago director, teacher and casting agent, Jane Drake Brody, will receive its world premiere at the Mainstreet Theatre in Michigan City, Indiana, beginning on September 12th, and running for four performances through September 20th.

Theatre Communications Group (TCG) has announced the publication of Annie Baker's The Flick, the 2014 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play, which will be available in paperback and hardcover, premiered at Playwrights Horizons in New York, NY in 2013 and is slated to receive a commercial run in the near future.
