COMPLIANCE, a film by Craig Zobel, an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival 2012 and the SXSW Film Festival 2012, is set for release by Magnolia Pictures on August 17, 2012.
Inspired by a chilling true story, Compliance explores just how far one might go to obey a figure of authority. On a particularly busy day at the local ChickWich, the fast food joint's high-strung manager Sandra (Ann Dowd, Garden State) receives a phone call from a police officer saying her employee Becky (Dreama Walker, "Don't Trust the B____ in Apt. 23") has stolen money from a customer.
Craig Zobel's gripping psychological thriller COMPLIANCE will be making its New York premiere this Friday at BAMcinemaFest in Brooklyn on June 29th. Director Craig Zobel, actors Ann Dowd and Ashlie Atkinson, and producer David Gordon Green will be in attendance.
Sunday, January 8 at 4pm Smoke Jazz Club will presents a reading of Frank Christopher's play Flutter By's, a play that pushes the suspension of disbelief envelope. The show will star Michael Cunio, America Olivo, Christian Campbell, Lou Liberatore, Ann Dowd, Brian Kerwin, Lea DeLaria, Annette Hunt, Gerardo Gudino, Eric Michael Gillett and Cindy Cheung.
First-time playwright Tommy Nohilly seems intent on ramming edgy family dysfunctions in the audience's faces with Blood From A Stone. Unfortunately there's no play underneath to support it all. Director Scott Elliott and The New Group do a heck of a good job covering up the flaws of the text most of the time, but the nearly three hours of animosity and head-banging symbolism can't help looking very silly now and then, despite the skilled ensemble.
An unflinching and darkly comic depiction of life in blue collar Connecticut, Blood From A Stone zeroes in on a working class family wrestling to keep it together as day-to-day struggles exert their squeeze. When Travis pays a visit to his parents' home, he finds an already volatile household imploding and his close-knit but deeply conflicted family teetering on the brink.
