Following a sold-out run at the acclaimed National Theatre in London, American Conservatory Theater-currently celebrating its 50th anniversary subscription season-will present the West Coast premiere of Tom Stoppard's newest work, The Hard Problem (October 19-November 13, 2016).

Actors Theatre's current staging of Macbeth is loud, bloody, and glorious. It's far from a definitive take on one of the Bard's finest tragedies, and no doubt some purists will wince at the modern dress and liberties taken with the script-gone is 'double, double, toil and trouble' as well as the entire porter scene- but for this horror movie fan and Halloween junkie, it's hard to imagine a better production.

The Realistic Joneses, Will Eno's brilliant new comedy, will play American Conservatory Theater's Geary Theater (415 Geary St., San Francisco) for a limited engagement March 9-April 3, 2016.

 To kick off her first season as the Jungle Theater's Artistic Director, Sarah Rasmussen will direct THE TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA, one of William Shakespeare's first plays. With twists that echo in his later work, this lavish production honors and mirrors Elizabethan tradition with an all-female cast. The new version also offers a modern take on Shakespeare's own Globe Theatre, bringing 24 seats on stage to create a dynamic connection between actors and audience. The Two Gentlemen of Verona opens February 12 and runs through March 27 at the Lyn-Lake neighborhood theater, 2951 Lyndale Ave. So. in Minneapolis. 

Philadelphia Theatre Company will present the gripping and timely play Exit Strategy by "Chicagoan of the Year" Ike Holter January 29-February 28.  Directed by Kip Fagan, the production features an ensemble cast with Michael Cullen, Aime Donna Kelly, Rey Lucas, Deidre Madigan, Christina Nieves, Brandon Pierce, and Ray Spahn. Othello—The name speaks to one of William Shakespeare's most acclaimed tragedies first produced in 1603, and has seen thousands of reincarnations, perhaps hundreds of thousands in the past four centuries. How does American Players Theatre (APT) at their Up the Hill venue renew the drama's intense spirit? On an August summer evening, APT stages under John Langs direction, Andrew Boyce's scenic design and Matthew J. Le Febvre's striking costume design a very intimate and evocaive “Tragedy of the Moor of Venice.” 

Noel Coward's popular play Private Lives currently on stage at American Players Theatre might be ripped from modern entertainment headlines. These scenes of two recently divorced spouses reconnecting for a romantic tryst could be versions of Duchess Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew living unmarried under one roof (after their long ago divorce) and wishing for royal approval to remarry. Or perchance reminiscent of Gyweneth Paltrow and Coldplay's Chris Martin separating and naming their split a "conscious uncoupling," Coward's 1930 production appears more believable decades later, continually relevant for contemporary audiences.
