New Theatre Restaurant's 'Barefoot in the Park' is a charming, time warp that points up how much attitudes in America have shifted over 55 years. A romantic comedy in the best 'Doc' Simon tradition.

Desert Rose Playhouse's 2017-18 'gay heritage production' is Lanford Wilson's FIFTH OF JULY, which the company pulls off admirably except for some pacing problems.
Inspired silliness. Now playing at the New Theatre Restaurant in Overland Park through February 11, 2018 is the 1994 British farce 'Funny Money' starring Jim O'Heir. It is an Olivier Award nominated, misbegotten tale of misdirection, accident, flight, and comic mistaken identities.
Desert Rose Playhouse's director, Jim Strait, and musical director, Joel Baker, have added popular numbers and Christmas songs to Charles Busch's TIMES SQUARE ANGEL to create what the playbill calls a musical pastiche. Their fine work, along with the terrific acting and singing, result in a production that provides laughs, while tugging at the heartstrings.

Desert Rose Playhouse has opened its 2017-18 season its sixth with a brilliant production of Christopher Durang's simultaneously literary and loony 2012 comedy, VANYA & SONYA & MASHA & SPIKE (VSMS), which Durang has likened to taking Chekhov scenes and characters and whirling them around in a blender.

Growing up in a blue-collar family in Rhode Island, sisters Dolores and Sandra both dreamt of a life more meaningful, far from the home they grew up in. Now adults, both women are dependent on men and both are vulnerable. Sandra has settled for security within the safety of domesticity, whereas Dolores has used her sexuality as currency in the pursuit of a more exciting life. On an unexpected Sunday afternoon, both sisters share a moment of revelation. Dolores takes audiences on a journey that explores universal themes of family, love, relationships and resilience as well as the darker aspects of domestic violence.
Harold Gray, the original creator of the cliff-hanging comic strip that features the pupil-less girl known as 'Little Orphan Annie', may be just a footnote in history, but most people are aware of the musical adaptation, ANNIE, of his creation that premiered in 1977. Even though it was reworked a couple of years ago, that version is not the one that's currently on tour. I didn't see it, so I have no clue what was changed, but I do know that this charming and delightful work by Thomas Meehan, with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin, still maintains its humor and heart with its heroine's search for love and acceptance during the darkest days of the depression.
