It's amazing how many Hollywood comedies, cult and otherwise, have been turned into musicals, some successfully, some not so much. Which brings us to ELF, freely adapted from the amusing Will Ferrell vehicle of the same name, but lacking his particular comedic talents. That's not to say there isn't an audience for this show. Packed houses with families in tow seem to be eating up the playful nature of this holiday fare, and it's understandable. I brought my son along and he had a jolly good time as well.

NETworks Presentations, LLC, Warner Bros. Elf the Musical is bringing the Christmas spirit to the Detroit Opera House until December 15th and is a fun time for the whole family. The entire production delights from beginning to end as it tells the story of Buddy, the orphaned human child who is brought up by Santa and his elves only to discover his real family is living in New York City without Christmas spirit.

Mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe - coming off a starring role in Robert Lepage's production of the Ring Cycle at New York's Metropolitan Opera - heads to Chicago for her Harris Theater debut, performing alongside the award-winning French-Canadian ensemble Les Violons du Roy and Music Director Bernard Labadie, October 17 at 7:30 pm. Ms. Blythe and Les Violons du Roy stop in Chicago as part of their North American tour running October 14 - 27.

The cast of 8 includes Alan Smith, Eliud Kauffman, Christopher McAllister, Amir Levy, Everett Goldner, Chris Olson, Temi Hason, and Kate Szekely. Performances will be staged at Venue #16: Robert Moss Theatre at 440 Studios, 440 Lafayette Street, NYC for five performances from today, August 13-24, 2013.

Director/producer April James has secured the rights and gathered a high-powered cast for a special presentation of the classic Odets melodrama, Awake and Sing! on April 21, 2013. The play, set in The Bronx during the depression, centers on the conflicts of an impoverished Jewish family. The parents manipulate the children to their own ends while the children fight to gain control of their dreams. The play's message still comes across loud and clear during the current economic upheaval whose ramifications have been called hauntingly similar to those of the Great Depression.
