BWW Reviews: ELF THE MUSICAL Brings the Christmas Spirit to the Detroit Opera House
Elf the Musical is bringing the Christmas spirit to the Detroit Opera House until December 15th and is a fun time for the whole family. The entire production delights from beginning to end as it tells the story of Buddy, the orphaned human child who is brought up by Santa and his elves only to discover his real family is living in New York City without Christmas spirit.
Matt Kopec plays the lead character of Buddy, the beloved movie character originally brought to life by Will Ferrell in the film. Kopec is outstanding as Buddy. His dynamic personality on stage along with his incredible voice and fun dancing make it hard to not watch him while he is on stage.
Matthew Alan Smith, Jane Bruce, and Tyler Altomari play Buddy's family that he discovers he has. Smith plays Walter, his father, who does not have any Christmas spirit. He has a great chemistry with Kopec and the two of them bring a lot of comedy to the show with their opposite characters. Bruce has an incredible singing voice as Emily and performs some endearing duets with Altomari who plays Michael. Kate Hennis is wonderful as Jovie, Buddy's love interest. Her deadpan delivery of lines brings lots of laughs from the audience and her number "Never Fall in Love" is a showstopper.
From the start of the show when Santa comes on stage to the end of the show when he bids the audience a good night, it is a Christmas filled show. The singing, the dancing, the colors, and happiness of production will delight ages. Elf the Musical brings the holidays to life with the tale of Buddy the elf.
Elf the Musical is playing now through December 15th at the Detroit Opera House. For more information and tickets, visit www.broadwayindetroit.com.
