New Children's Book APPLES FOR THE PRINCESS is Released

Professional storyteller K. Sean Buvala and his wife Michelle Buvala have teamed up to create and release 'Apples for the Princess,' a children's book featuring a rare fairy tale retold for modern kids along with hand-crafted watercolor-and-cloth illustrations. This new book is available in paperback or Ebook at Amazon.com or at applesfortheprincess.com. Free coloring pages, based on the book, are also available on the website for adults and kids. Sean Buvala, a nationally-travelled storyteller and founder of Storyteller.net, created this story book from an obscure Grimm fairytale titled, 'The Griffin.' He suggests that this story becomes a teaching tool for parents. Buvala says, 'The old wizard in our book repeatedly says, 'Well as you say, so it is.' This saying then becomes the catch-phrase that parents can use with their child throughout their growing years. It can be both a gentle warning and an encouragement. It becomes a real-life reminder that our actions and words influence what happens around us.' In an age where it seems that most books are now illustrated by computer, 'Apples for the Princess' is hand-illustrated by Michelle Buvala. Using a combination of vivid water-color, carefully-cut paper and cloth accents, Michelle has created detailed, full-page designs. Unlike computer-based images, this book is produced with art that actually exists in the real world which had to be carefully formed and laid out. Michelle says, 'I hope this book inspires young artists to create their own collage art.' Visitors to the website at applesfortheprincess.com can see videos of Michelle as she creates some pages. Sean previously released the parent-training book of DaddyTeller, which teaches parents how to use oral storytelling to interact with their children. In addition, working with the book helps families grow both the literacy and math skills of their children. He teaches parenting classes based on the 'DaddyTeller' technique throughout Arizona and beyond. This is the first of many new joint projects that Sean and Michelle will create for families. Michelle, a former elementary-school teacher, says, 'I've always wanted to illustrate kids' books. I am happy to be able to do so with my husband as a partner.' 'Apples for the Princess' is published by The Small-Tooth-Dog Publishing Group in paperback and electronic editions. Media Resources: smalltoothdog.com/mediakit

BWW Review: Kim David Smith Takes Alt-Cabaret to a Fantasia Level With His Electro-Show At Joe's Pub

Some performers push the envelope. In the case of Kim David Smith, no avant-garde, gender-bending, or mainstream artist dancing in the cabaret arena today takes more risks. Never was this more in evidence than in his brand new show, Stargazing at Joe's Pub on October 8. Few artists work harder to express themselves through the increasingly visible alt-cabaret genre than Smith. He doesn't just break glass ceilings he crashes them with a jackhammer. To accomplish this, he seamlessly re-imagines Weimar-era, neo-classicism and Berlin-channeling cabaret at every turn the likes of which have not been seen since Marlene Dietrich in the 1930 film, The Blue Angel.

BWW Review: At Metropolitan Room, Gary Crawford is Dreamy Singing the BARRY LEVITT SONGBOOK Which Is No Longer a Secret

For any cabaret performer, delivering an original song can be a nice touch in any show, but finding the right one can drive a singer crazy. The upside is that as well as highlighting the songwriter (which in some cases can be the singer's musical director) it gives the performer an opportunity to show what they can do with unfamiliar material. The combination of the two can be effective and memorable. Such was the case recently with singer Gary Crawford who along with musical director, arranger and songwriter Barry Levitt delivered a very compelling evening of songs on September 2 at the Metropolitan Room. Crawford is a lovable singer who highlighted the somewhat under-the-radar talent of one of cabaret's most respected musicians. After producing a MAC Award-winning show (for "Best Debut") in 2013-In Love With Love-and recording a subsequent CD, it was inevitable that Crawford and Levitt team up again, this time for Secret Dreams: Gary Crawford Sings The Barry Levitt Songbook.

BWW Review: South Coast Premiere of BIG FISH Is Indeed Heroic

Based on Daniel Wallace's 1998 novel and Tim Burton's 2003 film of the same name, Big Fish, with a few minor changes in plot, becomes quite an imaginative musical...with Andrew Lippa, composer of some of the best songs written for a Broadway show in a long time. So, it is hard to imagine why its Broadway run ended after a mere three months. Now in its south coast California debut, Big Fish comes to Moonlight Amphitheatre, Vista with a divine cast directed stylishly by Steven Glaudini and choreographed vibrantly by Karl Warden with sets and costumes from the original New York production. It's a real charmer and another big hit for Moonlight's winning season.
