Industry Editor Exclusive: To Dim or Not to Dim? How Broadway Chooses When to Dim Its Marquees

A couple of weeks ago when five-time Tony nominee Jan Maxwell died, I assumed the marquees of Broadway theaters would be dimmed. I emailed the Broadway League--the association of theatre owners and producers who issues press releases on such things--to ask 'when' it would happen. I don't know why I automatically assumed it would.

BWW First Person: What A Difference A Transfer Can Make; Looking at the Differences in Shows Between London and New York

Ever wonder how your favorite show looks on the other side of the Atlantic? Sometimes a show is exactly the same - and sometimes, the changes can make it nearly unrecognizable. It's no secret that productions cross the Atlantic all the time - whether they be iconic blockbusters like PHANTOM OF THE OPERA or more recent popular productions such as BEAUTIFUL and KINKY BOOTS. Sometimes, those shows end up almost exactly the same in their new home, with only the most minute changes; others appear to be entirely new pieces. The casts may change; staging may vary. Sometimes certain turns of phrase are edited or altered to make more sense, geographically or in terms of local slang.

BWW Blog: Annalise Prentiss - Color-Conscious Casting

Let's be real. I want to score tickets to Lin Manuel Miranda's new hit musical Hamilton. So, imagine my dismay when I am waiting in line to enter the theatre doors of another musical in New York when all of a sudden, some lady begins to talk about how confusing Hamilton was. 'I don't understand. Why are they all black? The presidents weren't black.' This brought to my attention how blind certain people can be to color-conscious casting. Recently, Hamilton posted online that they were seeking 'non-white' performers to fill the spots of characters in Hamilton. This notice sent up almost immediate conflict because of the term 'non-white'. Lawyerly responses stated, 'The New York City Human Rights Law forbids discrimination in hiring based on race.' In other words, there can be no limitations or restrictions in the hiring process based on what someone looks like physically.
