The Japan Art Association and Lord Patten of Barnes, Praemium Imperiale's International Advisor in the UK, have today announced the recipients of the 2021 Praemium Imperiale Awards.

The British Museum's Great Court – one of the most recognizable museum interiors in the world – turns 20 on Sunday 6 December 2020. Due to the lifting of England's national coronavirus restrictions and London entering Tier 2, the Museum will reopen ahead of the anniversary, welcoming the public again from this Thursday (3 Dec).

From September 17 through February 21, 2021, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) will present a major exhibition of works by celebrated architectural artist and painter Brian Clarke (b. 1953, United Kingdom).

Due to concerns and uncertainties caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic, the Japan Art Association has made the difficult decision to postpone the 32nd Praemium Imperiale annual Awards Announcement of new laureates for an entire year until September 2021.  

From March 21 through August 23, 2020, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) will present a major exhibition of works by celebrated architectural artist and painter Brian Clarke (b. 1953, United Kingdom). The first museum exhibition in the U.S. of Clarke's stained-glass screens, compositions in lead, and related drawings on paper, Brian Clarke: The Art of Light showcases the most considerable artistic and technical breakthrough in the thousand-year history of stained glass.

At a ceremony at the Meiji Memorial Hall in Tokyo today, Their Imperial Highnesses Prince Hitachi, honorary patron of the Japan Art Association, and Princess Hitachi paid homage to the winners of the 2019 Praemium Imperiale International Arts Award. Recipients are Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, Architecture (U.S.A.); William Kentridge, Painting (South Africa); Mona Hatoum, Sculpture (U.K.); Anne-Sophie Mutter, Music (Germany); and Bando Tamasaburo, Theatre/Film (Japan).

The Mother is a powerful, narrative dance production choreographed and directed by master storyteller Arthur Pita which has its London premiere at the Southbank Centre Queen Elizabeth Hall in June.  Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's dark tale, The Story of a Mother, this sumptuously designed production stars international dance superstar Natalia Osipova and award-winning contemporary dancer Jonathan Goddard.

They are Pierre Alechinsky, Painting (Belgium/France); Fujiko Nakaya, Sculpture (Japan); Christian de Portzamparc, Architecture (France); Riccardo Muti, Music (Italy); and Catherine Deneuve, Theatre/Film (France).

The Japan Art Association has appointed Caroline Kennedy, former U.S. Ambassador to Japan, as International Advisor to Praemium Imperiale. Starting in November 2018, she will preside over the U.S. Nomination Committee, recommending candidates for the Praemium Imperiale International Arts Award. Ms. Kennedy will succeed, Ambassador William Luers, former President of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, who served in this role for 18 years and will become an Honorary Advisor.

The Japan Art Association has just announced that Mikhail Baryshnikov, widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest dancers of all time as well as a multi-talented performing artist, and world music star Youssou N'Dour.

On September 11th at 4 PM, Utah Opera in partnership with the University of Utah School of Music hosts world-renowned soprano Renee Fleming at Libby Gardner Hall in an eye-opening free lecture exploring the connections between music, health, and the brain. "Music & The Mind" is an hour-long multimedia presentation with Renee Fleming and Norman L. Foster, M.D., Professor of Neurology and Senior Investigator of The Brain Institute at the University of Utah and Director of the Center for Alzheimer's Care, Imaging and Research. Tickets are not required but seating is limited and first come first served - doors open at 3:30 pm.

From hot air balloons to chocolate and wine, Utah Opera begins its 40th anniversary season with '40 Days of Opera,' community events from September 1 through the opening production of the season in October as a way of honoring the voices of the past, present, and future of opera in Utah.
