The Instigators follow up their acclaimed 2016 revival of Odets's Golden Boy with an immersive and intimate staging of Chekhov's THE SEAGULL. Lillian Meredith (Golden Boy) directs this imaginative, daring production using an agile and spirited adaptation of the text by Fergus Scully and Taylor Petracek, accompanied by a live soundscape that blends actor-created sound effects with original music composed by Sylvana Joyce. Performances run through June 18 at Access Theater. The production will be a precursor to a new indie film version of the play set to begin shooting in mid June with the same actors, incorporating elements of the live staging. Five time Obie Award-winning theater company Clubbed Thumb has launched a new artistic program aimed at supporting the development of early-career directors. The new directing fellowship is under the mentorship of Obie Award-winning directors and Clubbed Thumb affiliated artists Anne Kauffman (Belleville; Detroit; Clubbed Thumb's Dot, among others) and Ken Rus Schmoll (The Invisible Hand, Iowa, Clubbed Thumb's Card and Gift, among others). The program will be run in partnership with Playwrights Horizons Theater School, where Clubbed Thumb is currently in residence.
Now in its fifth year, Communal Spaces: a garden play festival will premiere eight new short plays inspired by and performed in four community gardens in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The festival will take place in the last three weekends on September.
