The Women's Caucus of Playwrights Guild of Canada (PGC) is pleased to announce Pamela Halstead as the winner of the 2019 Bra d'Or Award, which recognizes an individual for promoting and supporting the work of women playwrights in Canada.

Kick off the New Year with not one but FOUR acclaimed Karens of cabaret, joining forces onstage for the first time! "Everything's Coming Up Karens," slated for Friday evening, January 25, features performances by Karen Oberlin, Karen Mack, Karen Gross, and Karen Kohler, with musical direction by Tedd Firth. This one-night-only show at NYC's supper club and cabaret hotspot Beach Cafe is not to be missed. Dinner at 8 pm, showtime at 9:30 pm. What began as a social-media experiment by host, Mandee K. Hammerstein, has now turned into an exciting runaway train!  The "livestream" has attracted over 15,000 organic views within the first 2 weeks of production and a new sponsor (On Demand Programs and Events).  The original idea was to test-out Facebook's live-streaming feature (Facebook Live), to see if we could create a little entertainment for our supporters, while offering an "inside-look" into Oscar's home and demonstrate the power and energy within this museum in the making.  "We figured since fans can't come and experience the museum yet, we'd simply bring a taste of the museum to them, utilizing the very basic technology resources at hand.  People really love this series and look forward to virtually "meeting" the next performer in this very special space - Mandee K. Hammerstein. 

Cabaret Producer, Promoter, and Performer Stephen Hanks has been chosen by Urban Stages Founding Artistic Director Frances Hill and Director of Musical Theatre Peter Napolitano to Produce and Host the Opening and Closing Night Gala Shows for the organization's Ninth Annual WINTER RHYTHMS SERIES, running this year from December 12 through December 23 at the Urban Stages Theatre (259 West 30th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues).

Last December, after I posted my list of the Best Cabaret Performers of 2012, I followed up my original 'listmania' with a column that served as a way to include some 'honorable mentions,' basically a recognition of other memorable shows and performances of songs that were striking, unique, and/or original that year. The column received a positive response so I thought I'd wheel it out again this year. So as the hours tick away on 2013 and we anticipate the coming of a new year, here is an addendum to the 2013 New York Cabaret Performers of the Year--a totally random list of 30 Honorable Mentions of the 'Best' and 'Most' in Cabaret for 2013 . . . mainly because I can and it's fun. Enjoy and Happy New Year!

One of the biggest downers perpetrated by American culture is the characterization of Labor Day weekend as the 'unofficial end of summer.' But given what has passed for cabaret entertainment-at least the shows I was able to attend--since the 'unofficial start of summer' on Memorial Day weekend, the end of summer can't come soon enough. But my dismay over the hours lost watching average shows this season was tempered a bit by the pride and joy I felt watching the June performances of three strikingly attractive and talented 30ish brunettes with powerhouse voices-- Jackie Kristel, Karen Gross and Jodi Beck, who all staged entertaining shows as spring was turning to summer.
