Penobscot Theatre Company kicks off its 2017-2018 Season with the Maine premiere of an a cappella play with music both traditional and timely. The Fabulous Lipitones tells the story of a contemporary barbershop quartet that loses its tenor to a strenuously high B-flat before a major national competition. A scramble ensues to find a suitable replacement, and the best candidate takes everyone by surprise. The production runs from September 7-24, beginning with two discounted previews on September 7-8. As a playwright, Fierstein is well-known for the musical Newsies and the current Broadway production of Kinky Boots; Herman is best known as the composer of Hello Dolly and Mame. While La Cage Aux Folles is a multiple Tony-Award winning musical and one of Broadway's all time greatest hits, the story is perhaps best known as the movie The Birdcage, which starred Robin Williams and Nathan Lane.
