From August 10 to 26, the Negro Ensemble Company, Inc. (NEC), in conjunction with their residency at Penn Live Arts, will perform the world premiere of 'Mecca Is Burning' at Harlem School of the Arts.

The Negro Ensemble Company Remounts A SOLDIER'S PLAY This February


To reach an expanded audience, The Negro Ensemble Company, Inc. (NEC) will re-mount its 2017 revival of 'A Soldier's Play' by Charles Fuller, directed by Charles Weldon, from February 14 to March 4, 2018 at Gene Frankel Theatre, 24 Bond Street. The piece is historically NEC's most famous and successful play. It was produced last fall at Theatre 80 St. Marks as the culminating event of NEC's landmark 50th season, playing to full houses and glowing notices. The cast of that revival will return intact for the Gene Frankel Theatre run.

Theater For The New City presents the world premiere of Christy-Smith Sloman's provocative new play Negative Is Positive. This production is also the New York stage debut of Sean Avery, former NHL star, New York Ranger and LGBT advocate. Theater For The New City will present the world premiere of Christy-Smith Sloman's provocative new play Negative is Positive. This contemporary dramedy center's on a newly married interacial, upwardly mobile couple who's seemingly idyllic life is shattered by a shocking incident. Along with another couple, the unexpected incident forces them to explore issues of trust, failed expectations, jealousy, race and the true nature of their love. This production is also the New York stage debut of Sean Avery, former NHL star, New York Ranger and LGBT advocate. The cast also features Karen Eilbacher, Joshua Zirger, Vivienne Jurado and Fulton Hodges. Opening night is November 6th at 8pm.

An African-American woman who knew full well the sting of prejudice, she constantly searched for roles with strength and dignity while battling the mindset of the entertainment establishment. Often overlooked today, her story and legacy will be told by Tony Award nominee Hope Clarke (Caroline or Change, Jelly's Last Jam) in the world premiere of Steve Willis' Diana Sands: A Certain Toughness of Spirit. Directed by Sue Lawless, the show begins performances tonight, May 15 at the Workshop Theatre Company's Jewel Box Theatre, at 312 West 36th Street, on the 4th floor.
