A raging storm of laughs will hit the Shakespeare/Summerfest Orange County stage as George M. Cohan's comedy, The Tavern performs today, August 9-30. As part of SOC's commitment to a diverse season, The Tavern will provide audiences with a turn of the century comedy for all ages. Among new faces to SOC-including Ovation Award nominated Bo Foxworth- many SOC regulars will return for this production, as well as Producing Artistic Director John Walcutt.

Shakespeare Orange County will present William Shakespeare's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING through September 1 at Garden Grove's Festival Amphitheatre ---outside and 'Under the Stars.' Set during the 1920s, this production features costumes and music of the era. The Festival Amphitheatre will allow audiences to enjoy watching the story of 'Beatrice and Benedick' unfold through the brilliant language and action of the play performed by professional actors from an open-air stage. As has been speculated, Barbra Streisand may still play Mama Rose in a new GYPSY movie despite author Arthur Laurents' recent death. The sixty-nine-year-old legend was enlisted to play Mama Rose but then, Laurents decided not to go ahead with the idea, mostly because he didn't think another movie version was necessary, only to have seconds thoughts just before he passed.

Barbra Streisand has confirmed to the LA Times that she will indeed star in a new film version of GYPSY. The news leaked 'a little early, because the deal wasn't finished,' Streisand said. 'I am not sure about directing it. It may just be too much. I know I will be playing the part. It's like a bookend starting with 'Funny Girl.'

Michael Riedel is reporting in the New York Post today that straight from the mouth of bookwriter Arthur Laurents is word that Barbra Streisand is 'deep in negotiations to direct, produce and star in a movie version of GYPSY' for which Laurents has given her approval.
Laurents, who directed Streisand in her first Broadway show, I CAN GET IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE, and who wrote THE WAY WE WERE for her said that he's has long talks with her on the subject, and that 'She had a mother who she always thought was Mama Rose. I don't want to get into the details, but the point is she knows. She's got it in her. She's going to be much more than people expect.'

Oh sure, it's still the most breathtaking, emotionally packed evening of damn near perfect musical theatre in town (No, make that of theatre in town.) and Ms. LuPone's Rose is now an even more complex and finely detailed portrayal, but while she hasn't exactly turned demure on us for Gypsy's transfer to Broadway, she has seriously toned it down.
