When Landless Theatre Company announced that they were not only staging a production of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, but a Prog-Metal version of the musical, it caused many theatergoers to ask two questions: what is Prog-Metal and what does this mean for a show many consider a masterpiece?

With Stephen Sondheim's pemission, Landless Theater Company is set to bring an even edgier 'SWEENEY' to D.C.

Even if there are some missteps, I give Landless Theatre Company applause for the ambition alone and daring to do something a bit different.

Hope Operas, DC's own 'cliffhangers for charity' theater program will return to the Comedy Spot at the Ballston Mall 4238 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, for the 2011 season at 8:00 PM on Monday, September 12 and will run through October 10, 2011.

While the cherry blossoms are blooming - over 30 productions will be taking root on DC area stages in April. So come visit the Nation's Capital and see a show or two or more. There's something playing for everyone.

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, the hit made-for-the-web musical miniseries of 2008, comes to the stage in a production by the Landless Theatre Company. Co-created by writer-producer Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly), it follows the tongue-in-cheek adventures of aspiring arch-villain Dr. Horrible; his nemesis, the hunky Captain Hammer; and love interest, Penny. The show, directed by Andrew Lloyd Baughman, kicks off Landless Theatre's 2011 'Season of Horrible Taste.'

With over 30 new productions opening on DC area stages, 4 large festivals, and 2 world premiere musicals, it may still be chilly outside, but DC area stages are sizzling and bursting with great theatre. So come visit the Nation's Capital and visit our vibrant theatre scene.

With over 30 shows opening this month on DC area stages, there is a buffet of choices for local theatre goers and visitors to our nation's capital, from a Tom Kitt musical, to a bloody barber pie-filled Sondheim feast, to children's classics adapted for the stage, to American Idol contestants with slicked back hair, to a psycho woman and her schizo sister, to Commedia dell'Arte. There's something for everyone, so come visit the DC area, and have a monumental time in our theatres!

The Fall theatre season in the DC area is in full bloom. As the leaves are turning, there is a colorful group of shows opening this month. There are so many, so where do I begin? Here are shows that I am looking forward to seeing, and remember I am a musical theatre lover who likes to sprinkle in a play or two - here and there - so don't get mad if I don't choose one of the plays you are looking forward to seeing. The Landless Theatre Company brings Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit’s award winning musical Nine to Washington, DC in the first local production since the Tony Award winning Broadway revival in 2003. The production will be presented on the stage of the beautiful, newly renovated GALA Hispanic Theatre at Tivoli in Washington’s Columbia Heights, which opened its’ doors in January. The musical, based on Fellini’s film, 8 ½, features an almost all-female cast and a brilliant score including “Unusual Way,” “My Husband Makes Movies,” and “Simple.” Landless’ unique production will combine music, theatre, and film in tribute to Fellini’s influence.
