The Drowning Girls by Beth Graham, Charlie Thomlinson and Daniela Vlaskalic is based on the real life crimes of George Joseph Smith, a serial wife murderer in the early 20th century in England. The three brides rise from their watery graves, finding solace and a shared purpose in their spectral afterlife. They relive their experiences with the charming but manipulative George Joseph Smith, revealing how he wooed them, convinced them to take out life insurance policies, and then systematically drowned them. Through their recounted testimonies, they expose not only their murderer but also the societal structures that allowed him to operate unchecked, empowering themselves by reclaiming their stories and uniting against their oppressor.
Kanata Theatre is at 1 Ron Maslin Way, Kanata, Ontario K2V 1A7, Ottawa.
