On September 11, 2001, the world stopped. In the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, it was the beginning of an extraordinary story of compassion, generosity and community.

When U.S. airspace closed following the attacks of 9/11, 38 planes carrying nearly 7,000 passengers were diverted to Gander. Overnight, the population of the isolated Newfoundland community nearly doubled. Strangers from around the world found themselves stranded far from home, while the people of Gander opened their schools, homes, kitchens and hearts to welcome them.

Come From Away, the internationally acclaimed musical by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, brings this remarkable true story to life through unforgettable characters, humour, heartfelt storytelling and a powerful, folk-inspired score. From lively Newfoundland rhythms to moments of profound tenderness, the music captures the fear, confusion, laughter and unlikely friendships that emerged during those extraordinary five days.

At its heart, Come From Away is a story about what happens when we choose to care for one another. It reminds us that community is about more than a place on a map. It is about opening the door, sharing what you have, and recognizing our shared humanity even when the world feels divided.

This production marks a special moment for Ottawa theatre. Suzart Productions in collaboration with Maple Leaf Theatre Productions, Inc. has been granted the first-ever community theatre rights to produce Come From Away, bringing this celebrated Canadian musical to an Ottawa community theatre stage for the first time.

For Suzart Productions, a volunteer-driven Ottawa not-for-profit dedicated to making musical theatre accessible to the community, the story could not be more fitting. Just as the people of Gander came together to welcome thousands of strangers, this production brings together performers, musicians, artists, volunteers and audiences from across our own community.

And this September, as we mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Come From Away offers a timely reminder that even in the darkest moments, there can be extraordinary light.
