Valencia College Theater to Present THE LARAMIE PROJECT, 6/7-14

By:

The Valencia College Theater will present "The Laramie Project," a play about the murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard, June 7-10 and June 14-17.

Written by Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project, the play examines what happened in the community of Laramie, Wyo. in 1998, why Shepard was murdered and the role and reaction of the townspeople. Members of the theater group interviewed 200 townspeople to create a dramatic compilation of "moments" from the interviews. Critics have called the play "chilling" and "redemptive."

The play features more than 60 characters played a company of eight actors. It will be performed in Valencia's Black Box Theater in "arena style," with the audience on four sides of the stage. The play is being directed by Valencia's artistic director, Julia Gagne. The set was designed by Aaron Babcock.

Curtain times will be 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. Sunday performances will begin at 2 p.m.

General admissions tickets cost $10. Tickets for seniors and Valencia faculty, staff or students are $8. Tickets can be purchased online at www.valenciacollege.edu/arts
