Cellist Zoe Keating to Play 1200 Club in Holland Center, 5/2
Omaha Performing Arts presents the one-woman orchestra phenomenon Zoë Keating at the 1200 CLUB inside the Holland Performing Arts Center on Friday, May 2, 2014, at 8:00 p.m. The performance is part of Omaha Performing Arts' 1200 CLUB 13/14 Series. The performance takes place in the intimate Scott Recital Hall. Keating uses a cello and a foot-controlled laptop to record layer upon layer of cello, creating intricate, haunting and compelling music. She is known for both her use of technology and for her DIY ethic, which has resulted in the sale of over 45,000 copies of her self-released albums and a devoted social media following.
Born in Canada and classically trained from the age of 8, Keating obtained a degree from Sarah Lawrence College and then spent her 20s working in software while moonlighting as a cellist in rock bands. She eventually combined the cello and the computer, developing her signature style of live-layered music while improvising for late night crowds at her San Francisco warehouse. She quit her job and started releasing her music without a label, believing that her listeners were out there and she just needed to find them. Her 2010 album, Into The Trees, spent 49 weeks on the Billboard classical charts, peaking at No. 7. She is working on a third album.
Keating's grassroots, label-less approach has garnered her much public attention and press. She speaks regularly on artist-empowerment, sustainable careers and the concept of artist-as-entrepreneur, has been profiled on NPR's All Things Considered, named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and awarded a performing arts grant from the Creative Capital Foundation. She serves on the boards of the San Francisco chapter of the Recording Academy, the Magik Magik Orchestra and CASH Music, a nonprofit organization that builds open source digital tools for musicians and labels.
Keating has performed and recorded with a wide range of artists, including Imogen Heap, Amanda Palmer, Tears for Fears, DJ Shadow, John Vanderslice, Rasputina, Pomplamoose and Paolo Nutini. She has collaborated and performed with WNYC's Radiolab, and her commissions include music for the San Francisco MOMA and soundtracks for the films Ghost Bird, The Devil's Chair and Frozen Angels. Her music is also regularly heard in films, TV, dance productions and commercials.
The 1200 CLUB transforms the Holland Performing Arts Center's most intimate venue, the Suzanne and Walter Scott Recital Hall, into a relaxed nightclub setting where patrons can experience performances by nationally and internationally known artists in jazz, blues and comedy. While enjoying the evening's entertainment, audience members may enjoy hors d'oeuvres and cocktails served right to their candle-lit table.
