  3. St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble: The Musical Offering & Frederick The Great

Music and intrigue from the court of Frederick the Great fill this noble program. A standard-setting hub of ideas and influence throughout much of the Enlightenment, Frederick’s court employed C.P.E. Bach, son of J.S. Bach, whose progressive music the king preferred over his famous father’s. Yet the elder Bach would prove his mettle: after being challenged by Frederick to improvise over a complex 21-note theme the king had written, Bach responded with his sublime Musical Offering—the heart of which is heard here alongside music by the king’s court composers of choice: Quantz, who taught Frederick the flute; Graun, who served as his Kapellmeister; and C.P.E. himself, rumored to be the real author of the Musical Offering theme.

Program also being performed at the The Church of St. Luke in the Fields on April 23 at 8:00 PM.

Quantz: Trio in E-flat for Flute and Violin
J.S. Bach: Cantabile, ma un poco Adagio from Violin Sonata in G Major
C.P.E Bach: Quartet in G Major for Flute, Viola, Cello, and Harpsichord
Graun: Sonata in C Minor for Viola and Harpsichord
J.S. Bach: Trio Sonata from the Musical Offering
