(02/20/2020) - At its fourth annual “Culture in a Changing America” symposium on Saturday, Park Avenue Armory, together with lead partner National Black Theatre and nine additional New York City-based cultural institutions, announced the lead group of artists they commissioned as part of the 100 Years | 100 Women initiative. In addition to the Armory and National Black Theatre, the commissioning institutions are: Apollo Theater; The Julliard School; La MaMa Experimental Theatre Company; The Laundromat Project; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of the Moving Image; National Sawdust; New York University (Department of Photography and Imaging, Tisch School of the Arts; Office of Global Inclusion, Diversity and Strategic Innovation; and Institute of African American Affairs & Center for Black Visual Culture); and Urban Bush Women.

(02/19/2020) - This February, rising indie Shakespeare company Match: Lit brings to its audience one of William Shakespeare's best-loved comedies in As You Like It. The production is directed by Laurel Andersen (Barefoot Shakespeare, Occupy Verona, Turn To Flesh Productions) and is produced by Match: Lit's Executive Artistic Director, Kristin Sgarro, who also serves as the production's composer and musical director. The production will open Thursday, February 13 and close Sunday, February 23.

(02/12/2020) - Leading NYC arts education nonprofit Inside Broadway (Executive Director, Michael Presser) recently begun its city-wide school tour of All Kinds of People, a special musical revue developed in collaboration with The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, designed to promote tolerance and acceptance using the words and lyrics of the great Oscar Hammerstein II. The tour will play about 90 performances over the course of 10 weeks at over 50 NYC public schools in The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens & Manhattan.

(02/11/2020) - Spit&vigor will be presenting the world premiere of another intriguing period piece. THE WAKE OF DORCAS KELLY, a dark comedy written by Sara Fellini (NYIT Award nominee and Planet Award winner) on nominee) is the story of an executed brothel madam and the friends, family, and secrets she left behind. The piece – taking place in Dublin, 1762 – is staged in the round with minimal set pieces, with the audience embedded in the walls and furniture of the brothel-turned-funeral home. Sex, lies, murder, and the untold secrets of the dead are unearthed and exposed.

Shela Xoregos directs a cast of six, including Ethelyn Friend*, Sarah Kebede-Fiedler, Carla Lewis*, Bennett Saltzman, Gene Santarelli*, and Jacob Silburn with violin excerpts performed by Laura Zawarski. Original music has been composed by Barbara Rottman. (12/10/2019) - The Classical Theatre of Harlem presents the second year of its holiday production, A Christmas Carol in Harlem, based on the timeless work by Charles Dickens. This year's production is directed by Carl Cofield based on an adaptation by Shawn René Graham with new choreography by Tiffany Rea-Fisher (Artistic Director of Elisa Monte Dance).This season, the show moves into a three-quarter thrust theater, offering audiences a more intimate theater experience and allowing them to share in the spirit of the show. Cofield has re-imagined large portions of the work to fit this new space and to build on the festive themes throughout the play while allowing the drama of Scrooge's past to unfold. This includes a new set, music pieces, projections, costumes and casting that establishes A Christmas Carol in Harlemas a modern addition to New York City's annual holiday offerings.
