NYU Presents "Plays from the Provincetown Players" 2/25-3/6
New York University will produce Plays from The Provincetown Players, featuring one-act plays by Eugene O'Neill, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Susan Glaspell, at the Provincetown Playhouse, 133 MacDougal Street, Feb. 25-27 and March 3-6. The production is directed by Joe Salvatore and features a cast of students from NYU Steinhart's Program in Educational Theatre. [Subway: A, B, C, D, E, F, M (West 4th Street)].

Plays from the Provincetown Playhouse brings together three one-act plays by members of the original Provincetown Players, a group of artists and writers who presented the work of new American Playwrights, first in Provincetown, Mass. and later in Greenwich Village. The one-act plays that comprise the production are Eugene O'Neill's Fog (1914), about two men trapped on a lifeboat off the coast of Newfoundland; Edna St. Vincent Millay's Aria da Capo (1920), which follows the dramatic structure of a da capo aria and pulls from both British Harlequinade and Greek tragedy; and Susan Glaspell's Trifles (1916), loosely based on a real-life story of a woman accused of murdering her husband.
In bringing these three disparate plays together, Salvatore says, "All three plays have an element of discovery, and the characters ultimately come to see what's actually present in their own worlds. Similarly, I think that in the renovated Provincetown Playhouse, even though it has changed radically, we can still see what's there: the legacy of these three playwrights and many others who've worked there over the last century. Legacy doesn't disappear when a physical structure changes."
Rounding out the creative team are director Salvatore, dramaturg Jenni Werner, scenic designer Andy Hall, costume designer Traci DiGesu, lighting designer Emily Stork, sound designer and composer Benjamin Johnson, and production stage manager Talia Krispel. The cast features NYU Steinhardt Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions' students Rebecca Branscom, Tyler Grimes, Augustus Jacobson, Robert Keith, Christopher Lindsey, Emily Mansfield, Heidi Schoenenberger, and Rachel Whorton.
