Horse Trade Theater Group Announces Summer 2011 Programming

Horse Trade Theater Group (Erez Ziv, Managing Director, Heidi Grumelot, Artistic Director) announces their 12th season summer lineup, which will include new shows from The Management, Wide Eyed Productions, and Rising Sun Performance Company as well as the 2nd Annual Mini-FRIDGE and the first ever South African Theatre Festival.

Danno, Rene and Colette all know the truth: reality is written, reality is planned. As reality TV show writers their job is to pull out the drama - capture that hair pulling, perfect table flip showdown! But when they are forced to re-cut the season finale to their Housewives rip-off "The Ladies of Malibu" in three hours, not only do their jobs hang in the balance, but their own sanity, as they're forced to confront the real truth of how their choices have hurt one another.

Memory is a Culinary Affair

Memory is a Culinary Affair explores the impact of the 1970s dictatorship in Argentina through the eyes of Carina, who was a small child at the time. Now in her mid-30s and living in New York, Carina must decide whether to return to Argentina and her former boyfriend, who is still in love with her, or to stay in New York and make a new life with her current boyfriend. As she ponders her choices, Carina must confront the scars left by events that tore her family apart during her childhood.

Being the misadventures of the rascal Petruchio, who's got it into his fool head to work his way into a wealthy family by hitching himself to a hellraiser named Kate. Trouble is, she's just about the meanest, nastiest cuss in town, and ain't no one willing to marry her, no how. So he's gotta find himself a way of taming this fiery lass, before she ends up taming him -- which she just might.

Wide Eyed re-imagines Euripides' The Trojan Women, one of history's most powerful plays on the eternal tragedy of war and genocide, and brings the ancient text to new life with heart-pounding immediacy and the relevance inspired by our current American military operations.

Rising Sun One Acts
Presented by Rising Sun Performance Company

The Rising Sun Performance Company will present their 5th annual One Acts Series. RSPC put out a national call for plays, and out of over three hundred submissions, only 20-25 plays will be given a staged-reading; and out of those plays, 4-5 are given a full production. The plays chosen for full production are selected based upon Ensemble and audience votes. Selected plays will be announced in June.

In celebration of North American independence Horse Trade, under the auspices of NAFTA, NASDAQ and AFLAC, has joined forces with the autonomous nation of Canada to create a fun little festival bringing back some of our winter FRIGID favorites as well as some new work from FRIGID applicants who did not make the lottery this year. Running thru Canada Day with a special early evening edition of the FRIGID sensation Canuck Cabaret and closing with the annual Horse Trade 4th of July BBQ this mini festival is crammed with all the patriotism we as North Americans can muster during this special holiday season.

Imbewu: The Contemporary South African Theatre Festival
July 24-August 7

The Imbewu Trust aims to celebrate Contemporary South African theatre internationally, highlighting original work with a global resonance. The trust seeks to showcase significant trends in the South African theatre landscape, and to introduce South African theatre makers to the world stage.

August 11-28
The Red Room (85 East 4th Street)
Lines by Terence Patrick Hughes is a gripping new play about race and humanity set in a fictional yet familiar country where a line has been laid down, separating blacks and whites. Directed by Heidi Grumelot and presented by Horse Trade Theatre in association with Ice & Fire Theatre of London.

HORSE TRADE THEATER GROUP is a self-sustaining theater development group; with a focus on new work, it has produced a massive quantity of stimulating downtown theater.
