Carnival Girls Productions To Present The World Premiere Of THE MAGAZINE

Critically acclaimed playwright Christie Perfetti Williams's new play, THE MAGAZINE, will have its World Premiere at The Chain Theatre in Midtown Manhattan. The timely drama which is mixed with comedy will have a limited run, April 2 - 11. Opening night is slated for Thursday, April 2. Williams's recent New York City productions include The Werewolf of Washing Heights (Carnival Girls Productions) and An Appeal to the Woman of the House (Retro Productions).

The production is directed by long-time collaborator Matilda Szydagis who recently won a SAG award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel wherein she currently plays Zelda. Williams and Szydagis previously worked together on Carnival Girls Productions Our Beds Are Crowded and Look for The Woman. Original music for The Magazine was created by Savannah based singer/songwriter, Jason Bible.

Set in a small town in Upstate New York, Margie and James Hadlow struggle with coming to terms with the recent murder of their son. When a mysterious magazine arrives, they are forced to search for answers and understanding. Love and fear collide as they grapple with grief, guns, porn and the loss of their only child.

Director Matilda Szydagis who has helped champion the play discussed what drew her to the production, "With so many school shootings, gun violence, and overall disquiet so many of us feel over the state of things right now, The Magazine is timely, relevant, and beautifully captures this concern, confusion, and vexation." She went on to share, "Even with profound loss and emotional struggle, the note of hope that endures helps to remind us that love, compassion, and empathy is what is needed and it starts within ourselves and our personal relationships. Christie has a unique ability to "see" people and her "slice of life" style has helped her create a play that has so many genuine moments of humanity in it."

The cast features C.K. Allen (Composure/Workshop Theater), Eddie Boroevich (The American Clock directed by Austin Pendleton/HB Studio), Lori Funk (Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens/Comedy Central), Shiro Kihagi (Criminal Queerness Festival/IRT Theater), Ric Sechrest (An Appeal to the Woman of the House/Retro Productions) and Kristen Vaughan (Pumpkin Pie Show: Stump Speeches by Clay McLeod Chapman.)

The creative team includes costume design by Ben Philipp (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), scenic design by Sandy Yaklin, lighting design by Annie Garrett-Larsen, sound design by Margaret Montagna, properties design by Claudia Nolan, stage management by Maggie Manzano, and assistant stage management by Chelsea Janke. Produced by Matilda Szydagis and Christie Perfetti Williams of Carnival Girls Productions.

Performances take place at The Chain Theatre, 312 W 36th Street (between 8th & 9th Ave.), 4th Floor, New York, New York 10018. Tickets are $25 and are available at https://www.artful.ly/store/events/19803. Running time: 75 minutes with no intermission.
