The evening's conductor, Tobias Ringborg, Swedish is also an outstanding concert violinist, and chamber musician. He is an active Ambassador for the Swedish music, and bring with them two business cards. Hugo Alfvéns vernacular Midsommarvaka gives us a taste of the Swedish midsummer. In this rapsodien depicted a rural midsummer party. We get to experience everything from the traditional låvedans with noise and hustle, spirits and fight, to romantic love in the seductive Midsummer night.
Wilhelm Stenhammar was steady old with Alfvén, and also has allowed himself to be inspired by midsummer in his two miniatures for violin and Orchestra. Stenhammar was both an outstanding pianist and conductor, and wrote among other things. three symphonies, two piano concertos, as well as a great romance and song production.
Sergei Rachmaninoff was similar to a competent Stenhammar concert pianist and conductor, he, too, with the three symphonies on the resume. Like many great composers Rachmaninov was self-critical and undertook revisions of his symphonies. It's
the original and longest version of his 2. Symphony we get to experience in this concert. The Symphony is filled to the brim of his characteristic and suggestive dramatic tonal language.
