A urfremførelse is a special event. Ahead of the premiere of Shostakovich 5. Symphony, was the atmosphere more charged than at any other time in music history. In the midst of a period of strong gains as a result of his success with the Opera Katerina Ismaelova, the composer was attacked in the Soviet regime's official organ, Pravda. Under the headline "Chaos instead of music", Shostakovich's music was criticized for its modernist tone languages. The signal was loud and clear, and the sender is also obvious-Joseph Stalin! Shostakovich aborted attempts on the 4. the Symphony to start off to compose the 5th, which was to get to the name of a Soviet artist's response to justified criticism. The public in Leningrad on the 21st. november was aware that there was more than the composer's career was at stake.

Professor of musicology, Jon-Roar Birch violence, which even met Shostakovich, is an outstanding music promoter, and tells more about the Symphony and the brilliant composer's struggle to survive in the Soviet dictatorship.
