Breakdown

THE BURIAL AT THEBES is a version of Sophocles, ANTIGONE, adapted by Irish Nobel Laureate, Seamus Heaney, based on the fifth century, B.C. tragedy, Antigone, by Sophocles.

Antigone, daughter of Oedipus, King of Thebes, learns that her two brothers, Polyneices and Eteocles have killed one another in the fierce battle for the rule of Thebes. Creon, Antigone's uncle and newly appointed King of Thebes, buries Eteocles as a hero and forbids any attempt to bury Polyneices on the grounds that he was a traitor. Antigone, loyal to her brother,Polyneices, vows to bury him against the wishes of King Creon who threatens death to anyone who would deny his decree.

The director, Charlotte Moore will be in attendance at the audition.

Nontraditional casting is desired.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN, THE BURIAL AT THEBES

Many characters may double as messengers and chorus. All characters must have command of classical delivery.

Antigone
Late teens, early 20s. Daughter of creon, Princess of Thebes. Loyal, intelligent. Used to having her own way.

Ismene
Early twenties. Princess of Thebes. Intelligent, beautiful, loyal to antigone up to a point. Wary of breaking the rules.

Eurydice
30s/40s. Queen of Thebes, wife to creon. Younger than her husband. Threatened by creon's intractibility, but loyal to the state.

Haemon
Early 20s. young man in love with, and affianced to Antigone. Son of Creon. Begs his father to reconsider the decree of death to whomever buries Polyneices.

Tiresias
An old man. A blind poet. A sage. His prophecies are feared.

Chorus
A Greek chorus of townspeople. Sometimes played by other members of the cast.

Guard
30s/40s. One who guards the royal family. Fierce....lower caste, full of street smarts.

Messenger
30s/40s. The one who knows and tells. Has much good advice and much bad news.

Creon
ROLE CAST. Recently appointed King of Thebes. Not patient, but loves his nieces. An older man, determined to see his orders honored. (This role is cast)
