Previews: BADJELLY THE WITCH at PUMPHOUSE Theatre, Auckland

This April school holidays, a much-loved story leaps from page to stage as Badjelly the Witch arrives at The Pumphouse in Takapuna—bringing with it a joyful, slightly spooky, and gloriously silly adventure for the whole whānau.

For many parents and grandparents, the names Dinglemouse, Mudwiggle, Dulboot, and Lucy the Cow will spak instant nostalgia. Now, a new generation has the chance to meet them live on stage, alongside Tim and Rose, as they venture deep into an enchanted forest in search of their beloved cow. What begins as a simple quest quickly turns into a wild encounter with the most fearsome (and ridiculous) witch of them all—Badjelly herself.

Based on the iconic tale by Spike Milligan and adapted by Alannah O’Sullivan, the story is packed with absurd humour, unexpected danger, and a cast of delightfully oddball characters—from Binklebonk to Silly Sausage and Jim the Eagle. It’s fast-paced, funny, and just the right amount of mischievous, capturing the imagination of audiences young and old.

This production also marks an exciting step forward for StageAntics with the launch of NEXT STEPS, a new initiative supporting young performers as they transition into the professional theatre world. Many of the cast have grown up with StageAntics and are now taking that next leap into tertiary training, professional gigs and beyond. Badjelly the Witch offers them a vital bridge—professional experience in a nurturing environment, and a chance to share their craft with the community that has supported them along the way.

Audiences are invited to make their theatre experience even more special, with cast meet-and-greet and autograph signing opportunities following each performance—so young fans can meet their favourite characters up close (and don’t forget to bring your programme for signing!).

Performances run from 9–11 April, with multiple daily showtimes, including NZ Sign Language interpreted performances, a relaxed performance and discounted access tickets to ensure the magic of theatre is accessible to all.

Whether you’re revisiting a childhood favourite or discovering Badjelly the Witch for the very first time, this is a chance to share laughter, adventure, and a little bit of
